Tangentially related to writing success... my first self-published book, Immortal, just got me my first real, career-based writing job. After 17 years in IT, I get to write for a living and leave tech troubleshooting to others.

Re: Writing Room/Office/Space

I am super envious! I work so much better when I can take brain breaks to look at nature. Right now I'm living in a dense suburb, which is a little rough. The dream is to move out to a slightly more rural school district once I have my teaching degree. It's totally worth the hours of mowing and rid...

Re: Writing Room/Office/Space

Currently, I have a desk off the living room (large central living space). My wife is a CEO of a small company and travels a lot, so I end up monopolizing the area most of the time. When she's home and working, we tend to use the same space since we both tend to enjoy listening to instrumental music...

Re: Writer's Group

Do we have to use Google Docs? Have they removed the 'we own a % of what you create with it' clause from the Terms of Service? I have a fully functional copy of Word, and I reluctantly put things on Dropbox as it is, as I don't like Cloud storage at all. You don't need to use Google Docs, no. I als...

There is an embedded attachment option that works okay. However, there are Dropbox and Google Docs plugins that can be used in conjunction with Slack now. Those will probably come in handy more than the drag and drop methodology.

Re: Finishing Stories

Am I setting myself up for failure for aborting so many potential stories instead of getting in the habit of completing one before moving on to the next? Sorry, but... yes. Endings are a huge, huge part of whether a story works or not. For every story I bump from slush at PodCastle, there's another...

I pulled up an old story that I thought had some major plot issues, so I stuck it in the trunk about four months ago. Re: Jibber Jabber - Q3 - Volume 34

There's nothing better than writing a huge chunk of text thinking that it's absolute crap, leaving it alone in disgust for the night, then coming back and reading it and realizing it's actually quite good. Makes the stress worthwhile.

Re: Mixed Viewpoint Styles Across Characters

N.K. Jemisin did something similar in "The Fifth Season" and won a Hugo. If anything, what she did was more sneaky and disruptive of reader expectations. I say go for it, if you can make it work. I think I'm going to. After all, that's what drafts are for, right? The worst case scenario i...
