The first judge you have to get by in this contest is David Wolverton (aka David Farland). He has a pretty amazing writing tips blog where he’ll periodically drop nuggets of info alluding to where he is in the judging process.

Re: Success!

It’s a little thing, but my R from last quarter was accepted for a dystopia-focused magazine. wotf024 Ah, it's always sweet to sell a WOTF reject. Congrats, Michael! Thanks! I had a feeling it wasn't right for WOTF when I submitted it, but every now and then you have to try a passion project, right...

Re: Four in Thirty-Five (4 in 35!)

I'm torn. First, I wrote this comedic sci-fi piece and was going to submit it, but it needs a bit more work than I want to spend on it right now. Next, I have a flash fiction piece some folks were nice enough to critique for me, but, in a fit of over-confidence in editorial timelines, I submitted it...

Well, welcome to the group! You’re in good company.

If there’s one thing I can attest to, it’s we’ve all have felt, or currently feel, that way. This is, by far, the least judgmental, yet helpful group of commiserating hopeful (and current) authors you’ll find. :)

Re: Four in Thirty-Five (4 in 35!)

I'm down for a swap if anyone is ready. Ended up writing something completely different *stares longingly at original Q3 idea outline* so the piece I'd be exchanging is a flash story at ~300 words.

Re: Discussion - Q2 - Volume 35

I take a class from Dave as well and he's apparently battened down the hatches and gone into full novel-writing mode recently. Not sure how that'll affect results, but figured I'd share.

Re: Success!

Had a couple tiny successes this week amidst a ton of negativity. Apparently, my non-fiction articles have gotten enough traction on Medium that I'm now a top writer in the "Mental Health" category and I had one of those articles accepted to The Good Men Project (an online publication abou...

Re: critters.org Manuscript Notifications

I'll keep an eye out for it today!

The first few chapters of the novel I'm editing should pop up on there June 6th as well. The working title is "Fallen Gods" and the chunk is only ~8800 words if anyone is interested.

* Latest Edit pushes my submission back another week. Blargh.

Re: Four in Thirty-Five (4 in 35!)

Doing a massive rewrite of a novel I wrote (it's coming along really well!), but it's consumed the time I set aside for short story writing. Q3 *may* need to be something I'm not entirely proud of... ergh...

Re: Five Minute Rant

There's definitely an emotional component to it, I'd be lying if I said there isn't, but I have to imagine a lot of submissions could be improved by providing guidance to writers of any sort. Hell, half the submission guidelines I read are five or six years old and don't match the type of work they'...

Re: Five Minute Rant

To jump on this bandwagon... There's been some discussion about using "cold er " or "warm er ". I think the real nugget in this discussion is the idea of getting a single status at the bottom of a form rejection like: Proximity: Warm/Hot/Cold This puts the comparison strictly tow...

Re: Five Minute Rant

All of which is to say: believe me, I know forms suck, especially after an unusually long wait at a market (Strange Horizons got me that way just this week). But please don't read too much into only getting forms; it could mean, counterintuitively, that in some regards you're getting closer than yo...

Re: Five Minute Rant

Got a rejection today... yet another in a long string of form rejections. I know these folks don't have time to spare for lowly folks like me, but this one tripped me up and got me in a funk all damned day. You asked for a specific style of story, I provided said story in that style (and really like...

Congratulations Ishmael!

If you enjoy writing other genres and people are buying them, I don't see why not. You can always slip a little speculative element into everything if you get the itch, just remember to wrap it up with a nice "logical" bow at the end. ;)
