Re: SUPERSTARS Writing Seminar

Oh, and if you have the means and wish to enroll, PM me first and I'll get you a $100 discount code! I thought I had mentioned that. If you're going, sign up before January 1st--I think that's when the next rate bump happens. They're still taking scholarship applications until the end of the month. ...

Re: Moon's SUPER SECRET Bonus Challenge! Vol. 36

Nice work, Wulf. As I was catching up on the Super Secrets a few days ago, I thought "this is going to be an e-book, at the very least." Deep Magic isn't on Kobo, but I'll definitely get around to reading it soon. Thanks for your kind words about the SUPER SECRETS, Alex. It's not an impos...

Re: SUPERSTARS Writing Seminar

Two weeks away before the application portal closes. I can't do any more letters of reference or they'll think I'm just trying to get my friends in for free. : ) But it's worth attending if you're serious about taking your career to the next level, and you're here in the Forum, so I assume you are! ...

David Farland's New Book: WRITING WONDER

Just a heads up that Dave has a new book out on writing: WRITING WONDER. The Amazon copy reads: From the time when children first began gathering around campfires, we have been seeking tales of wonder--the feeling you get when something is strange and exciting. Most of the books we read are what I c...

Re: The Writers of the Future Podcast at Dragon Con

Martin Shoemaker's recent podcast is also nice. I enjoyed the good things he said about the spirit of the Forum. Instead of paying it forward, people here pay it now, using their knowledge to help fellow members. To me, that's the right way to be. Why wait until we get to the top to help our fellow?...

Re: Discussion: Q3 Volume 36

Thank you, Wulf.... The first story I read in Volume 35 Anthology was, of course, yours. I've said it before, I'll say it again – the strongest first-person tense I've ever read in science fiction, and it's difficult to imagine a more flawed, sympathetic protagonist, with a total command of emotion...

Wulf, you mentioned your story in deep magic magazine. I'm about half way through reading it. The story is spectacular! ... I'm not just saying that to be nice. The story (thus far) truely goes above and beyond mere awesomeness. Thanks so much, Christopher! It's gotten two wonderful reviews on Amaz...

Re: pseudonyms

Having said this, here is the reason I believe the industry is bending over backwards, and why some female authors still have fears about writing under a female gender associated name. Funny, I read this after the post above. Serendipitous timing! Here's the empirical data. https://www.tor.com/2019/...

Re: pseudonyms

On a related note, is it still limiting to have a female name when writing sci fi novels, or are we past that now? In getting that novel published right now, and in garnering awards, I would think it's a plus to be known as a female author. The industry is bending over backwards right now to prove ...

Re: pseudonyms

We are fiction writers, and spec fic at that. You can be anything you want. I think having a difficult name is an excellent reason to change it. If people can't remember or pronounce your name, how will they tell their friends to buy your books one day? Choose wisely. It will be your brand, and as y...

Hmm, the deep emotional journey might be one of my problems. Certain people around here can tell you other problems, I always seem to forget one or three techniques I know. I work at the emotion as I see pros do, but how deep it goes is another matter. Did you get Don Maas' book THE EMOTIONAL CRAFT...

It's a safe bet to assume all the ones that were just on the panel at Dragon Con are current judges. This would include Kevin J. Anderson, Rebecca Moesta, Tim Powers, David Farland, Rob Sawyer, and more.

Re: The Writers of the Future Podcast at Dragon Con

Doesn't bother me that I don't know who's talking, it's what they say that's interesting. For me, disregarding the length, it has a lot more than the other podcasts. I do like to have an idea of the ending of my stories - to have an idea of my destination, even if the journey can go its own way. I'...

Congratulations on being a semi-finalist in the first quarter of 2015. The competition was tough, and your story had a lot to offer. On the level of worldbuilding and writing alone, this was one of the strongest stories in the quarter—perhaps the very strongest. I so wanted to make it a finalist......

I've always been curious about Dave's semi-finalist crits.... what they look like and such. Are they in-line comments? Summary notes? A combo of both? How in-depth are they? Mine was just two comments: one about my protagonist's motivation and one about the ending. Yep. A course correction of just ...
