Re: Wulf Moon's SUPER SECRET Workshop & Challenge!

Crikey! Super Secrets had almost 2,000 views in the last 24 hours! That's crazy. People are studying these secrets, but like I've said, you challenge beasties have the run on them, because you've been doing the work! Don't miss this quarter, you know what's at stake! The Triwizard Cup! Eternal glory...

Re: Wulf Moon's SUPER SECRET Workshop & Challenge!

And don't forget to read your stories out loud. Your ears will find things your eyes can miss, such as messy meter. Reading out loud exposes the clunks. Fix them for the win! Perfect execution, my challenge beasties, from start to finish! If you wish to stand out from the rest, everything must be TH...

And it's submitted! Congratulations, Brandie! Good to hear you are in the running. I hope you found a way to get a speculative element in the first two pages. It's important. As to how I know these things, I entered the contest for 25 years. I was a member of Wordos, the writers group that has prod...

Good answers, AJZach. Again, #19 is best, because it's how the article moved you. "Doing it because I enjoy it" is so important. When we have fun with our writing, it shows up on the page. Congrats on getting so much done, Crystal. Didn't I see you wondering if you could make it just a wee...

So, my story, On the Nature and Origin of Dragons, which got an HM last year, just got accepted by an anthology. At pro rates. I've sold short stories before (2 shorts, 2 flash pieces) but never at pro rates before! (I'm still reeling, tbh) Yay, Jasmine! Congratulations, and may there be many more!

Nice answers, Retro! I enjoyed your comments. Especially to #19. : ) Yes, Martin and I have many similarities to our writer journeys. Dean Wesley Smith was my mentor as well when I lived in Eugene, Oregon. He also chose my story "Seventh Heaven" out of thousands when he was editor of Viaco...

I have been busy producing an audiobook, and I figured with the quarter closing, I needed to lay off assignments so you could get your beastie vows fulfilled. For those still wrapping up their Q2s, Dave's recent Writing Tips said something I'd like to repeat for emphasis: "4. Does the tale offer an ingenious solution? An ingenious solution to a problem isn’t just one that the average person hasn’t considered, it’s one that no one has considered. Stor...

Re: Wulf Moon's SUPER SECRET Workshop & Challenge!

Good to hear you applied Heart's Desire, RJK Lee. As you know, I think it's a critical element to every story that often gets talked about by instructors only as an addendum to the 7 Point Plot, if at all. It would be a mistake to overlook what is the most important aspect of a story--the internal e...

Re: Who puts out great fantasy novelettes and and novellas that sell well?

That's a great list! Thanks. I was wondering if a double-whammy strategy of seeking publication in the mags and then self-publishing it afterward might be good. I just don't know if people really buy stories of those lengths from self-published authors. It's very difficult for most writers to sell ...

Henckel: You've gotten great advice from others here, so I'll just add a point. I'm producing Jeff Wheeler's audiobook from his biography YOUR FIRST MILLION WORDS. Just yesterday I went over the section where he said there are two types of writers. I'll quote it for you: "As an avid reader, and...
