Re: Moon's SUPER SECRET Bonus Challenge! Vol. 36

I'm about done editing my fresh Q2 story. Hope to make my final decision on the last paragraph and then submit it today. Make it hit the gut, or touch the heart. Make it a line to remember long after the story is read. If you can go full circle, tie it back into your opening, that's always best. Fu...

Re: Moon's SUPER SECRET Bonus Challenge! Vol. 36

Mike Resnick has also been ill with Pneumonia and other medical issues. Sounds like he too is, nevertheless, trying to work. I hope they both take it easier and let themselves heal. I'm wrapping up my Q3. Have done several edits and it's time to let it marinate by itself for a while. I do one edit ...

Re: Moon's SUPER SECRET Bonus Challenge! Vol. 36

...with so much time ahead, why write only one? Why not push yourself and say I'll write both? Why not pick from the best of your fresh best each quarter? If I do this challenge for the next volume, that's how I would up the game. We are capable of much more than we believe, and must push our bound...

Re: Moon's SUPER SECRET Bonus Challenge! Vol. 36

I posted this on Q1, but we're talking about it here as well, so here it is: I think Dave is due for some serious lifestyle readjustments. We admire people that push through and carry on, but we don't want them to sacrifice their health to do so. Hopefully he will take it slow and make sure his body...

Re: Discussion: Q1 Volume 36

Good news! Dave's pneumonia has cleared up, his new pacemaker is working, and he'll hopefully be released from the hospital soon! But I hope he takes it easy and so I for one am just fine with Thursday being a few weeks off. I think Dave is due for some serious lifestyle readjustments. We admire pe...

Re: Moon's SUPER SECRET Bonus Challenge! Vol. 36

Oh, shoot. Hoping Dave has a speedy recovery. That's a horrible combo. Also hope he doesn't work too hard, taking it easy until he's back on the up. His Writing Tips newsletter today says he's planning on being at WotF--whether just for the gala, or for the entire workshop week, it doesn't say. Per...

Re: Moon's SUPER SECRET Bonus Challenge! Vol. 36

Update from Dave's FB. The surgeon won't install the pacemaker until he gets over the pneumonia. Makes sense. The body must be strong before undergoing any surgery. He does say he is going back to work tomorrow, whatever that may mean. It could mean he has judging to finish up. If so, expect delays ...

Eleven days before I head out on the trail to Hollywood, the workshop, and the gala. I should share that Dave notified his FB followers he had pneumonia and a heart attack, and likely had a pacemaker installed yesterday...I haven't seen the latest. These are serious health issues, and I know all her...

Re: Moon's SUPER SECRET Bonus Challenge! Vol. 36

I've got that Q2 entry in now, with today's final read-through complete. I have a sense of when my revisions mean I'm starting to get pedantic, which is generally speaking my stopping point -- I reached that today. And thanks to being pushed aside, I already have my second draft for Q3 ready -- all...

Re: Contest Questions

That said, I had a damn good reason for using the word in my story in Volume 35. wotf001 Your gore in #7 isn't gore at all. It's a rather benign description. But start describing torture in great detail, revel in the vivid suffering of another being, and you can cross the line of what is appropriat...

Re: Contest Questions

So. Trying to get an idea of how conservative WotF is in terms of content. So I figure they probably don't prefer: sex scenes, depictions of very graphic violence, the F-bomb. This ain't GoT, but what about: 1. "Damn" 2. "had an affair" 3. "had sex" 4. "shit"...

The Rule of Three was a brilliant story! I still think about it whenever I buy groceries. How dark am I? I do some craft and sewing, making my own stuff but is it enough to offset some of the dark? It's a story I think everyone should read. Or listen to! wotf001 May it win the Nebula! http://future...

Re: Moon's SUPER SECRET Bonus Challenge! Vol. 36

Do things really have to get 'worse' or can the stakes simply be raised? Conflict comes in different packages. Stakes getting raised = things getting worse, essentially, in my opinion. More needs to be on the line after every plot point. Tension should ratchet higher with every choice. Then again, ...

Did not know that about F&SF rejections. Got a few "didn't quite win me over" from Finlay. Now I feel better about those rejections. Awaken the rejectomancy! No, don't, but it wants to so bad. I have a couple of nicely personalised rejections from him that referred to specific details...

I would still say you can write a fresh story in about a day and still pull off a win, but as Obiwan said to Luke: "You must do what you feel is right, of course." wotf007 I would argue that I couldn't, simply because babies, but give me a week and I might be able to make something work. ...

Expectomancy! Nice! This is how I think it goes at the moment: 1. Finalists get a phone call. They are asked not to share on the internet yet. 2. The first waves go out on email over a few days - includes R, HM ,SHM. There doesn’t seem to be a clear order or anything. 3. Semi finalists wait a week ...

I'm not surprised by such a bias. Seems like a high percentage of the mags have limits at 6,000 and below. So there probably is an institutional bias toward smaller size. And I would guess editors will want to risk less mag-space on newer writers? And also leave room for more new writers? Chuckt: Y...

They’re putting their name and reputation on the finished product, and were chosen for their curative and editing ability.
