Re: Success!

Sorry I missed your announcement, Rebecca. Congratulations! Armies of conga rats dancing for you! The purpose of the contest is to help us become pro writers. We can do that through the contest, or we can do it outside. Either way, MISSION ACCOMPLISHED! Best of success to your continued writing care...

Re: Discussion: Q4 Volume 35

Good points, Jon! This is what happens on the editorial side before a story in WotF goes to the publishing team, and frankly, any other publication as well. No one should be surprised about that. The story already won on its own merits. Now, it's no longer a contest entry, it's a widget that has to ...

Re: Four in Thirty-Five (4 in 35!)

We set goals to hit the mark. Even if we miss the mark, we come closer to it because of the goal. Whether you're currently 3/3 or 0/3, here's to hitting a bullseye in Q4. It only takes one well aimed arrow!

Re: John Goodwin Interview: Great info on the contest from the guy that knows!

Thanks, Wulf. I listened to this. He mentioned you! So cool. (I also got a little shout-out...***bows humbly.***) I loved hearing about all the writers who entered and are now super famous. Was also amazed to hear that some winners couldn't attend the awards ceremony because they are incarcerated! ...

John Goodwin Interview: Great info on the contest from the guy that knows!

John Goodwin, president of Author Services, Inc., did an interview about an hour ago that I think would benefit anyone entering this contest. I am starting the topic and providing the link. Something fun to discuss! I didn't know that Brandon Sanderson's finalist placing kept him from quitting, quit...

Re: Four in Thirty-Five (4 in 35!)

Congrats on everyone setting a goal and achieving it. And even if you missed the target a little, the goal made you aim. That's what goals do, they force you to focus. Keep at it. You can hit the bullseye on your first try or your 70th, as "Topanga Canyon" Preston proved. But you will neve...

Re: Discussion: Q3 Volume 35

So even a rejection gets an email? What happened to the first one I submitted then? I didn't even get an email. It's a big contest, likely 3000 or more entries per quarter. You can understand why some things slip through the cracks every now and then. The contest coordinator, Joni, does an impressi...

And yeah, I'd hold off sending it elsewhere as well, on the chance it might be picked up as a published finalist. That's a nice consolation prize! With extra bonuses you won't get elsewhere.

Does anyone know how soon the certificates usually arrive? Mine seem to come one or two months after the email. My last one for Q1 was longer--Joni must have missed my response to send it. And read the latest WOTF volume of course. That seemed so obvious I didn't even mention it. But there's the winning stories, and it's winning stories you should be studying. They tell you what the judges believe is gold currently, and current is what matters. And after you've done that, forget every...

I'll weigh in as well--I've been doing this just about as long as Preston. : ) The answer is, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. You have to decide on the merits of the piece. There are wnners that kept revising, resending, sending it through Critters and workshops, resending again, until fin...

And I just got served. A silver honorable mention for Q2--the judge's way of saying if you give this another pass, it could be a finalist next time. This makes 12 honors out of the 13 times I've entered with David Farland as judge.

You will get an immediate rejection if you forget to take your name and identifiers off the manuscript (double check page headers and file histories). Justice may not be blind, but this contest certainly is!
