Re: Jibber Jabber - Q1 - Volume 35

Okay, I don't hate my Q1... More importantly, I believe I will finish on time. I will be on vacation for a week this month, leaving me precious little time. If I can finish in two weeks, get a reader or two, then cram-edit that final, holiday week, I'll submit something I like. Hopefully. Good time...

jficke: That "alcoholic superman" trick works because of what Algis Budrys always said. The story isn't happening on the paper, it's happening in the reader's mind. Our words are triggers to invoke images, and each reader is going to tack their own images to those icons we assemble on the ...

Re: Jibber Jabber - Q1 - 29

I write a combo as well. My two pro sales are in science fiction, but I love writing fantasy. If you want to hear one of my humorous fantasies, click on the website link and it's in the blog on podcast. Funny thing, you do need to research when you write about science, but when I'm writing historica...

Re: Goodbye, Publisher's Word Count!

That's me. I'm Topanga Canyon. When I found this out, it was one of the biggest shocks of my life. It was like I had a secret identity I didn't even know about. The stories I could tell you! And I fully intend to tell them all. The good news is: I didn't give up forever. I came back, and my stories...

Re: Jibber Jabber - Q1 - 29

What? 82 posts to go before this hits 5000? We're going to need a lot more help to do this before Martin gets out of the hospital, since I think they are releasing him TODAY! This is like herding cats! LET'S GO, LET'S GO, LET'S GO! This shall now become a welcome home party! And if we don't make tha...

Re: Questions: Scene breaks

You might want to read Martin Shoemaker's new thread, Goodbye, Publisher's Word Count! David Farland weighed in while we were talking about this on Facebook. Thank you! I saw your post, and the FB thread, and read them both with great interest. I'm with you that I think I'm a novelist at heart, but...

Re: Goodbye, Publisher's Word Count!

And the good news: editors DO take note of "beginner" writers that are close to creating professional stories they might be able to buy. They do enjoy discovering new talent, and it's a feather in their cap to say they were the first to publish someone that rose, say, to top of the NYT bes...

Re: Questions: Scene breaks

My stories tend to go long and so I made sure that the one I submitted for Q4 was under the standard manuscript format based word count just to be on the safe side. If my story gets rejected, I want to at least make sure its not rejected for a technical foul. You might want to read Martin Shoemaker...

Re: Goodbye, Publisher's Word Count!

This was a surprise. Dave said when he sees a submission at 16,999 words he immediately gets suspicious. When he does a word count check, 60% of the time he finds people went over the word count and then lied about it! Some of the word counts he cited were insane! Rules are rules. The easiest way to...

Re: Jibber Jabber - Q1 - Volume 35

Started my first draft of a story, yesterday. Got 500 words in, got stuck, went to work, and realized I was beginning the story too early while I was halfway through my shift. Had to scrap almost everything I wrote, this morning. Even so, I've gotten started! And I'm (GASP) pantsing my first draft....

HM on my second submission (first was R). It was a flash fiction with <750 so I'm a bit surprised I got it! Whoa, very interesting. I like that Dave read it all the way through, and liked it. There's a ton of flash markets, so I bet it sells somewhere. Congrats! Ditto on Dustin's comments! Well don...

I thought I'd posted my result already. Maybe I failed to press submit or something. Anyway I'm signing off from WotF with my eleventh HM, a batting average of .583 and a hitting streak of 12 consecutive entries. Close but no cigar. Not much more than a whiff of a distant cigarillo. Fortunately the...

Nice going on the sale, Wulf. And your comments are so very valuable. I started writing seriously about five years ago and entered Q3 and Q4 2012. Flat out rejected both times and I let it crush my hopes and dreams. But then I put on my big boy pants and got back to work. Q4 this year is the first ...

Just caught this thread. Adding my two cents. Not to the ones that send out stories beyond WOTF...that's just preaching to the choir. : ) It's dangerous to tell yourself, "Once I win this, it will prove I'm a writer, and I will start submitting to other pro markets." You are resting your w...
