Re: Discussion - Q2 - Volume 35

And yeah, I'd hold off sending it elsewhere as well, on the chance it might be picked up as a published finalist. That's a nice consolation prize! With extra bonuses you won't get elsewhere.

And the word is - nope. I did not win but I am not depressed. Coming this far on a story I fully would not expect to strike's Dave's fancy is a good feeling all on its own. Very sorry for you, Bob. Glad you aren't feeling down about it and are looking for the silver lining. It's an amazing honor to...

Re: Discussion - Q2 - Volume 35

Does anyone know how soon the certificates usually arrive? Mine seem to come one or two months after the email. My last one for Q1 was longer--Joni must have missed my response to send it. If you don't say you want it and fail to send her the requested info, it won't come. Joni has a lot to keep up...

Re: Discussion - Q2 - Volume 35

And read the latest WOTF volume of course. That seemed so obvious I didn't even mention it. But there's the winning stories, and it's winning stories you should be studying. They tell you what the judges believe is gold currently, and current is what matters. And after you've done that, forget every...

Re: Do you resubmit?

I'll weigh in as well--I've been doing this just about as long as Preston. : ) The answer is, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. You have to decide on the merits of the piece. There are wnners that kept revising, resending, sending it through Critters and workshops, resending again, until fin...

Re: Discussion - Q2 - Volume 35

As always, congratulations to everyone that entered. You wrote a story. You sent it to a pro market. The next step on the path is to send it to another pro market. Then you're really doing that writer thing--you're the kind of writer that wants people to read your story, because you've got something...

Re: Discussion - Q2 - Volume 35

Still super stoked since I didn't even realize how big this contest was when I entered this Q2 for the first time ever. So excited. Wonder ...

And I just got served. A silver honorable mention for Q2--the judge's way of saying if you give this another pass, it could be a finalist next time. This makes 12 honors out of the 13 times I've entered with David Farland as judge.

You're killin' me, Dave. : )

You will get an immediate rejection if you forget to take your name and identifiers off the manuscript (double check page headers and file histories). Justice may not be blind, but this contest certainly is!

Re: Publication Limit?

Somebody has mentioned before that Locus publishes circulation numbers. So it's possible to check on the 5000 circulation/hits qualifier on some. But I've also heard many small publishers will not tell anyone their sales numbers, even the writers checking to see if they still qualify for contests li...

Hey guys! Re: Publication Limit?

The rules are for "more than three short stories," etc, in a professional publication, ie one that pays at least 6 cents a word and has a circulation of (I think > 5000?). A lot of people have a nice string of very reputable semi-pro publications, that is, in venues that pay less than 6 c...

Hello and welcome to all the new! Whether you're a high school Senior or a Methuselah, until you have more than three pro sales (as deemed by SFWA's standards), this is the place you should be submitting your speculative fiction. Do take a hike over to SFWA's online site if you haven't already. You'...

I take a class from Dave as well and he's apparently battened down the hatches and gone into full novel-writing mode recently. Not sure how that'll affect results, but figured I'd share. Yeah, he's finishing his Runelords series. That's a good point. As the airport arrival and departure board will ...
