Re: Publication Limit?

The rules are for "more than three short stories," etc, in a professional publication, ie one that pays at least 6 cents a word and has a circulation of (I think > 5000?). A lot of people have a nice string of very reputable semi-pro publications, that is, in venues that pay less than 6 c...

Re: NEW USERS! INTRODUCE YOURSELVES!

Hello and welcome to all the new! Whether you're a high school Senior or a Methuselah, until you have more than three pro sales (as deemed by SFWA's standards), this is the place you should be submitting your speculative fiction. Do take a hike over to SFWA's online site if you haven't already. You'...

Re: Discussion: Q3 Volume 35

Submitted for the first time in a while. Certainly the first time since 2016. I finally finished a story I'd had in the works for several years that I thought might be a fit. Yay me! Edited because I went back and checked: my last entry was longer ago than I thought. Sheesh. Congratulations on step...

Re: Discussion - Q2 - Volume 35

I take a class from Dave as well and he's apparently battened down the hatches and gone into full novel-writing mode recently. Not sure how that'll affect results, but figured I'd share. Yeah, he's finishing his Runelords series. That's a good point. As the airport arrival and departure board will ...

Preston, may I quote you on your Topanga Canyon story? It's inspirational, and I'd like to share it on my public forums. I think it would encourage many. I know for a fact a couple of people have cried happy tears reading it, including Joni herself. Cheers!

Re: NEW USERS! INTRODUCE YOURSELVES!

Welcome aboard, Smitty! Congrats on your first sale! If you view this as just another market to send your stories to, it will be a lot easier. Don't self reject...you are not the judge, Dave is. He won't even know if it's you if he does reject it--this is a blind contest, so put your blinders on and...

Hey, is it time to twitch for Q2 yet? I've had missing words in finalist pieces. It's not a fun feeling when you spot them but it doesn't automatically disqualify you from making finalist! Now, winning on the other hand... Dave's blog usually gives us the first signs. I've missed a few, but I'll ke...

Re: NEW USERS! INTRODUCE YOURSELVES!

Hello all! I haven't been on one of these forums in quite a while; not since I used to do some freelance art and writing on RPG.net. Anyhoo, my new friend Wulf Moon advised me to come by and join up. I actually submitted my first story to WoTF back in 2016 (don't recall the quarter), and it came in...

I knocked his socks flat off!!! He had some very nice things to say. True story. Hey, Preston. Yeah, I told Dean th...

Re: Reject Rejectomancy!

About a year and a-half ago I submitted what I thought was the best story I'd ever written. I thought it had everything it needed; the five senses, strong character interaction, strong plot, an emotional ending. Until the very end I thought it would definitely be accepted. Alas, it was a rejection ...

It looks like I'm about a week late, but one piece of advice I would give is have a story ready to submit every quarter. In other words, use the contest to help you develop a habit of writing at least one new story every ninety days. Eventually you will win. Great advice. Even if you don't win a qu...

I read mine back-to-front looking for typos and missing words. Was told by an editor that the latter is a fatal error. A text to speech program can help with spotting issues like that. Some word processors have them built in. Mine doesn't, so I use this one: https://www.naturalreaders.com/online/ V...
