Re: Wulf Moon's SUPER SECRETS Workshop & Challenge!

MUZIK MAN ASSIGNMENT ACT ONE: THE BEGINNING -Super Secret 44: Moon didn’t give his character some obscure, hard to pronounce, alien robot name. He named him something we could all pronounce and we knew exactly the connotation that had, even if the word Music was spelled different then we’re used to....

Welp, I was hoping for more than an HM on this one. Alas, no such luck.

Re: Wulf Moon's SUPER SECRETS Workshop & Challenge!

Thanks for the commentary, Moon.

This one was much stronger at 350 than 250. Lost a lot of context in the final trim. Looking forward to being able to expand upon this one. Thanks again!

Re: Wulf Moon's SUPER SECRETS Workshop & Challenge!

Not that I expected any less, but “Muzik Man” was tremendous. Go read the Super Secrets in action!

I don’t want to say too much before others have read it, but prepare to fall in love with another of Moon’s supersympathetic characters!

Re: Wulf Moon's SUPER SECRETS Workshop & Challenge!

Moon, thank you for the faith you've placed in me. In many ways, I feel I don't deserve it. After all, my v.37 record was q1 R, q2 R, q3 HM, with hopefully something much more exciting in q4. I mentioned previously I was mired in the midst of my worst wotf stretch. I became used to a predictable HM,...

Re: Wulf Moon's SUPER SECRETS Workshop & Challenge!

Final assignment: I’ll keep this brief, since I already mentioned some of this in my last post. My biggest takeaway is the importance of setting a scene properly. Ground the reader in the setting, give each character you introduce some description for the reader. I tended to sprinkle this in stories...

Re: Wulf Moon's SUPER SECRETS Workshop & Challenge!

250 comparison: First 250: Jhoon’s lies protected. Disguised. Refugees, with their life savings, fleeing to Ezris, were easy marks for ransom. Religious pilgrims weren’t. A good lie because it was true. The Olemic church on Ezris could cure Rhakti. “Sure about this?,” Jhoon asked. Shokhad nodded. “S...

Re: Wulf Moon's SUPER SECRETS Workshop & Challenge!

Crystal, got your Q4 sub down! Nice job! :) Retro: what time zone are you in? And follow-up, are you somewhere that doesn't do daylight savings? Because that could explain the hour discrepancy. The zoom meeting did start at 5pm mountain time (so I signed in at 7pm eastern). I'm really sorry you mis...

Re: Wulf Moon's SUPER SECRETS Workshop & Challenge!

I’m late on stage 5, but here we go. I chose an opening line from a book and an author you may not have heard of. The Hobbit, by J.R.R. Tolkien. “In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit.” It’s a simple line, and the following sentences build off it like steps leading us into the wondrous land c...

Re: Wulf Moon's SUPER SECRETS Workshop & Challenge!

Assignment, Phase 3 "The Paper Menagerie" by Ken Liu is my favorite short story. I didn't realize until after I read it multiple times that it won the Hugo, Nebula, and World Fantasy awards (the first ever to sweep all three). 1. How did the author make a powerful vision of their world ope...

Re: Wulf Moon's SUPER SECRETS Workshop & Challenge!

Openings assignment 2 Happy to be the first to get to "Yellow and Pink" by our fellow beastie Leah Ning. First the title. While maybe not as in-your-face as Moon's winner, I think there's some intrigue here. I think the use of color immediately gets the reader's brain to start imagining a ...

Re: Wulf Moon's SUPER SECRETS Workshop & Challenge!

ASSIGNMENT: How do you open your first scene? Before you even start reading the story, how did I hook you? - interesting title, which gives the reader some sort of footing going into the story. You’ve got a feeling you’re going to read about some happenings on the moon. Next. What I was doing in tho...

Re: Wulf Moon's SUPER SECRETS Workshop & Challenge!

I'm up for swapping stories, whether just the openings or the full piece. I often find I can't really critique an opening without seeing the full story to guess at what the author intended. Plus, as a reader, I always glance at the ending after reading the opening, so... If my Q4 isn't ready by tha...

Re: Wulf Moon's SUPER SECRETS Workshop & Challenge!

Thanks Becky,

This is helpful.

I think what’s becoming clear to me is you can know something, and think you’re applying it, but the reader is not experiencing it the same way. It comes with practice, but crits definitely help.

Re: Wulf Moon's SUPER SECRETS Workshop & Challenge!

Proposal to my fellow R’s: Since the most likely explanation for an R was that Kary felt the opening failed in some respect (and I personally have had a much harder time getting through her than Dave as a first reader), perhaps we can form an “opening crit pack” where we can review the first couple...

Re: Wulf Moon's SUPER SECRETS Workshop & Challenge!

Einstein, I am not aware of anything Kary has said specifically. But it does seem clear she has different preferences, as most of my submissions to Dave were HM’s, while my submissions to Kary have been R’s more often than not.

Maybe I’m getting worse! But I don’t believe that’s the case :)
