Re: Wulf Moon's SUPER SECRETS Workshop & Challenge!

Moon’s class was excellent!

I expect future opportunities for him to teach, and it’s well worth the time and money for anyone wanting to level up!

Re: Wulf Moon's SUPER SECRETS Workshop & Challenge!

I'm up for swapping stories, whether just the openings or the full piece. I often find I can't really critique an opening without seeing the full story to guess at what the author intended. Plus, as a reader, I always glance at the ending after reading the opening, so... If my Q4 isn't ready by tha...

Re: Wulf Moon's SUPER SECRETS Workshop & Challenge!

Thanks Becky,

This is helpful.

I think what’s becoming clear to me is you can know something, and think you’re applying it, but the reader is not experiencing it the same way. It comes with practice, but crits definitely help.

Re: Wulf Moon's SUPER SECRETS Workshop & Challenge!

Proposal to my fellow R’s: Since the most likely explanation for an R was that Kary felt the opening failed in some respect (and I personally have had a much harder time getting through her than Dave as a first reader), perhaps we can form an “opening crit pack” where we can review the first couple...

Re: Wulf Moon's SUPER SECRETS Workshop & Challenge!

Einstein, I am not aware of anything Kary has said specifically. But it does seem clear she has different preferences, as most of my submissions to Dave were HM’s, while my submissions to Kary have been R’s more often than not.

Maybe I’m getting worse! But I don’t believe that’s the case :)

Re: Wulf Moon's SUPER SECRETS Workshop & Challenge!

Guess they’re coming in now. That’s 2 quarters in a row for me with an R. Need to work on my openings I guess. Good luck to everyone else. 2 quarters in a row is better than my 6 quarters in a row. So keep going. Likewise. Stings a bit to realize you’re not where you hoped to be. But we’ll get ther...

Re: Discussion: Q2 Volume 37

Well, I just got an email saying my submission didn't place. Does that mean it got a hard rejection or do we hear about honorable mentions later? Either way, it is a bit disappointing, I thought it was a good submission. I wonder where I went wrong. That’s an R. R for me too. Good luck everyone.

Re: Discussion: Q2 Volume 37

Long time lurker here. Been following the thread and enjoying it, while also trying to stay distracted with a new novel WIP. That said, I happened to be over on Submission Grinder and noticed a rejection report had been filed for Writers of the Future. A 132-day form rejection, posted today, 07/14....

Re: Discussion: Q2 Volume 37

It's only the kiss of death when done poorly. As much as some of the judges complain about it, a lot of the winning stories are in first person. First person, when done well, is more immersive than any other perspective. So don't stress it. :) Agreed. Many of the judges are on record saying first p...

Re: Discussion: Q2 Volume 37

I got HMs for my first two entries to the contest and am awaiting Q2 results with interest as the story I submitted for it I think is better than the first two. Watch me get my first rejection now... This is in contrast to my Q3 entry, which I really don’t like very much at all. From my experience,...

Re: Wulf Moon's SUPER SECRETS Workshop & Challenge!

Dialogue to vignette: Elias patted the rough granite-like snout of his stone-mule, Beau. It had been a long while since Beau’s last sanding. One more reason they needed to head back home. These superstitious Northerners had some ridiculous notions about stone creatures. Not to mention what they thou...

I had an ancestor named Mozie Moon, and have known for a long time I needed to write a story about a character with that name.

Re: Wulf Moon's SUPER SECRET Workshop & Challenge!

The Emotional Craft of Fiction might be the book I would recommend any new writer read first. It’s about how to make readers feel things, and whether we understand it or not, we all love reading because of how it makes us FEEL. That said, I think the book does a tremendous job of recommending differ...

Elias looked up at his grandmother who sat in the saddle of their stone-mule. “Grandmother, why are we going this way? We need to be moving south.” “What I tell you about calling me that, boy?” “Sorry, Mozie. Just trying to show some respect, like they taught me in school.” “Respect! Respect would b...

1) Flow state is when you’re “in the zone.” When things fall into place seemingly on their own. 2) one of the interesting things in the article was about being strategic with caffeine. Caffeine can get you to flow state faster, if you’re smart about when you consume. A big one for me is the idea of ...

Re: Wulf Moon's SUPER SECRET Workshop & Challenge!

In a way, what Orson Scott Card said is that he KYD’d Enders Game.

It was a short story first then he built the novel around it. He already knew the heart of the story and he added to it. Just like we expand our KYD flashes into short stories.

The WotF forum is a place where new writers who are serious about being professional writers can congregate, meet others like themselves, and learn what it takes to WIN. I have no doubt that when I break in, whether through WotF or elsewhere, the forum and the friends I have made there will be one o...

Re: Wulf Moon's SUPER SECRET Workshop & Challenge!

The KYD exercise has helped me focus my stories. CCrawford mentioned the word “tighter” which is exactly the word that came to mind for me. I’ve had some commentary that my stories are doing a better job of “pulling” the reader along. As someone who started writing as an aspiring novelist, my storie...
