But then we had about 10 earthquakes. ... the first was magnitude 5.8 then a bunch of smaller ones hit about every 10 minutes. My daughter and I were standing next to front door when it starte...

1) Flow state is when you’re “in the zone.” When things fall into place seemingly on their own. 2) one of the interesting things in the article was about being strategic with caffeine. Caffeine can get you to flow state faster, if you’re smart about when you consume. A big one for me is the idea of ...

Re: Wulf Moon's SUPER SECRET Workshop & Challenge!

Moon,

I’ve been meaning to ask about Fyrecon. To your knowledge, is that continuing as planned?

Figured I’d post the question here so the public can see the answer too.

Re: Wulf Moon's SUPER SECRET Workshop & Challenge!

In a way, what Orson Scott Card said is that he KYD’d Enders Game.

It was a short story first then he built the novel around it. He already knew the heart of the story and he added to it. Just like we expand our KYD flashes into short stories.

Re: Uncle Moon Wants YOU!

The WotF forum is a place where new writers who are serious about being professional writers can congregate, meet others like themselves, and learn what it takes to WIN. I have no doubt that when I break in, whether through WotF or elsewhere, the forum and the friends I have made there will be one o...

Re: Wulf Moon's SUPER SECRET Workshop & Challenge!

The KYD exercise has helped me focus my stories. CCrawford mentioned the word “tighter” which is exactly the word that came to mind for me. I’ve had some commentary that my stories are doing a better job of “pulling” the reader along. As someone who started writing as an aspiring novelist, my storie...

Re: Wulf Moon's SUPER SECRET Workshop & Challenge!

Oh! I forgot to quote OSC (maybe someone did this already). “Fiddling is the death of dialogue.”

I think he said fiddling is the death of one or two other things too.

So, fiddling is death. Don’t fiddle.

Re: Wulf Moon's SUPER SECRET Workshop & Challenge!

I finished the workshop. What an excellent tool, especially for writers that haven’t stumbled across the super secrets thread. Some takeaways for me personally: - OSC’s discussion about starting a story was great. Having an interesting idea is great, but it’s not a story until you really know who yo...

Re: Wulf Moon's SUPER SECRET Workshop & Challenge!

Oishisushi, my story was also heavy in dialogue, a first for me. And heavy in dialect, also a first for me. I was trying something new, and I guess it just didn’t work. Which is a shame because it was my favorite story I had written until my q2 submission, with my strongest ending. Maybe I’ll try ed...

Re: Wulf Moon's SUPER SECRET Workshop & Challenge!

Hard not to be disappointed in an R, but pushing the emotion aside I know logically that the reason for an R could range from having some identifying information left on my submission to something about the opening just not working. Planning to give it a quick once-over and get it submitted to anoth...

Re: Discussion: Q1 Volume 37

In that email, Joni did very clearly say “if you’re wondering about Q1, I’m sending out results next Tuesday.” As those who have been submitting to the contest for a while know, Joni has been known to be relatively optimistic with how quickly results will come. However, I haven’t ever seen her give ...

Moon, your post is a particularly meaningful one for me. I have a good handful of HM’s under my belt now, but nothing more (hopefully that changes on Tuesday, ha!). Re: Wulf Moon's SUPER SECRET Workshop & Challenge!

Like Henckel I’m also halfway through educational tapes. It is incredibly written. Amazing how I can feel like I’m in some sort of dystopian, Orwellian world so quickly, just from the 2nd person narration. “You” are really the only major character, and you don’t really know a whole lot about “you,” ...

Re: Wulf Moon's SUPER SECRET Workshop & Challenge!

TOP TIER: F&SF. I’ve been submitting there first for a long time. I enjoy the stories, Charlie’s tiered rejection format is great, and I tend to write more Fantasy than SF and he’s one of the “big ones” that consistently publishes Fantasy. SECOND TIER: Beneath Ceaseless Skies and Deep Magic. Whe...

ZT, sounds like a plan. Bring an instrument. Any instrument. Guitar, drums, Irish recorder, woodwind, brass, string. Or bring your harmonizing voice whether you're an alto, baritone, bass, soprano. Only one place in life I found was like The Prancing Pony. In Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. It's called T...

Re: Wulf Moon's SUPER SECRET Workshop & Challenge!

I’m late. I don’t like my “new normal,” nearly as much as my old normal. But Moon’s pictures and stories, and my challenge-mate’s posts are super inspirational. Re: Wulf Moon's SUPER SECRET Workshop & Challenge!

And I’m in. WoTF with story 1, and an expanded KYD for story 2. Seems like F&SF is a popular first destination (aside from WoTF) and rightly so. Seems like life slowed down for many lately. For me, it sped up quite a bit. The day job has been requiring more time and brain power than normal, but ...

Re: Wulf Moon's SUPER SECRET Workshop & Challenge!

I can’t find the post (somewhere on the page above) where someone asked about a character’s heart’s desire changing in the story. I don’t recall if anyone has addressed this. Anyway, I say yes. It happens to real people all the time, and thus, it’s reasonable in a story. But, be mindful that it may...

Re: Wulf Moon's SUPER SECRET Workshop & Challenge!

It really should be the 8 Point Plot. A story should open with 1. A character 2. In a setting 3. With their heart's desire 4. With a problem (often the inciting incident that's keeping them from obtaining their heart's desire). 5. They must try. 6. They must fail (and things get worse) 7. Trials mu...

Henckel, I got a kick out of your prompts.

My fiction tends to lean more serious, but I’m lighthearted and love humor irl. I think I’ll use one or two of your prompts to get me to explore some range in my writing.

This one is special, because Wulf is taking time out of his post-winner life to provide guidance and support to writers who haven't reached that point in the journey yet. It's public and I know it's im...
