Re: Discussion: Q3 Volume 36

One separate thing I would recommend is submitting to markets that give good feedback. Many give just form responses, but some are far more forthcoming and helpful, and as such, very valuable to someone trying to hone their craft. Leading Edge is one such--not swift, for sure, but the couple of tim...

Re: Moon's SUPER SECRET Bonus Challenge! Vol. 36

Damn, Wulf. I read Super Duper Moongirl last week. I've been thinking about it since. That's always a sign for me that there's something special about a story, when it sticks with you. And this one is following me around like my own personal moon dawdler. Anyway, I'm late to the party, but I'm in. ...

Re: Discussion: Q1 Volume 36

Sorry to all the R's.

I think this is my 7th quarter, but this may be the first time I've seen a "wave" rather than a mass dropping of R, HM, and SHM together.

How long are these waves typically spaced out?

Sorry if I'm confusing people. The 25 would be for Q1, yes.

The q4 would be Tim Powers and OSC talking about the present tense story they voted on.

Re: Discussion: Q1 Volume 36

In the podcast, Dave talks about still having 25 stories to choose his finalists from (which we know he finished judging beg of last week), so I think Tim and OSC were talking about Q4. Ah. Somehow I must have missed where he said he currently had 25 left. I thought that was a hypothetical when I l...

Re: Discussion: Q1 Volume 36

I meant that Andrew and Wulf's stories were both in present tense, not first person! I haven't had my caffeine yet this morning. I'm guessing that's what they were referring to. Having read the anthology, in my highly biased opinion Wulf's story was the only one that needed to be present tense. I d...

Re: Discussion: Q1 Volume 36

Anyone listen to the latest podcast with Dave, Tim Powers, and OSC? They talked about judging for "this quarter." Do we think that's q1? If so, there was a little hint that a story told in present tense did well. Commence twitching. If it was Q4, the winning piece by Andrew Dykstal and th...

Re: Discussion: Q4 Volume 35

Glad we're almost there. This has been the least twitchy I've ever been leading up to Thursday. With big things happening in both my professional life (certification exam) and personal life (moving), I've been able to keep my mind on other things. I'm a little surprised I have a story in at all. It'...

Re: Discussion: Q4 Volume 35

I made the mistake of submitting to BCS at the beginning of the month thinking their rejection comments might give me some ideas for editing before submitting for Q4. Now I'm worried I won't hear back before the end of the month. Ouch! That was a risky gamble. I'd start writing something new quick!...

Re: Discussion: Q4 Volume 35

I got my piece to under the 17K limit, but then I read some of the winning stories in Volume 33 and realized several things. 1. my entry may work if it is a longer piece (novel length), but for the purposes of a short story in this contest, it's too complicated and has too many points of view and i...

Re: Discussion: Q4 Volume 35

Secondary world fantasy - my personal playground - has had a hard time getting past some of the final judges. That is slowly changing, with the addition of more fantasy-friendly judges like Brandon Sanderson and the lamented passing of judges like Jerry Pournelle who were hard bars to cross (of my ...

Re: Discussion: Q4 Volume 35

I've noticed there tends to be a relatively low number of stories that make it into the anthology every year that are alternate world fantasy. At least more recently. It seems most fantasy I see as winners in the contest lately tend to be some blend of modern/contemporary/urban fantasy. I know alter...

Re: Discussion: Q4 Volume 35

Hey all, Been in and out of the contest over the last few years. Racked up a few HM's and a couple R's. Got a lot in my personal/day job world keeping me from writing as much as I'd like, but I suspect that 2019 will be my year to commit to putting words on screens more consistently. So my question ...

Re: Go for the novel? Or stick with the short story?

I think it's important to understand that short stories are not inherently easier to write than novels. In fact, the opposite could be true. Novels of course take more time, more brute force, more perseverance. But not more skill. Each length of story telling has its own intricacies. My advice is to...

Re: NEW USERS! INTRODUCE YOURSELVES!

Hey everyone, I've been lurking here for a couple of years around results time. Figured it's about time to start contributing. As they say, debilitating anxiety loves company. My first submission was Q4 2015, I believe. Q4 2017 is my fourth submission. HM, R, HM, so far. Excited to twitch with you a...
