Re: Moon's SUPER SECRET Bonus Challenge!

Glad the Wulf Pack name stuck! Letting my 1,000 word story simmer for a couple days. Targeting it around the emotional prompt is very helpful. I tend to throw too much into my short stories, so this is a great exercise for me. Great job everyone on everything submitted so far. Can’t wait to join the...

Re: Moon's SUPER SECRET Bonus Challenge! Vol. 36

Thanks Wulf,

I'm truly excited to write, to learn, and to find some new friends with a shared passion. To be part of the Wulf Pack, I suppose.

Excited to cheer all of you on. I fully expect we will see some winners and pro sales this year!

Re: Moon's SUPER SECRET Bonus Challenge! Vol. 36

I’m excited to apply this exercise to more, fresh pieces. BUT, I just applied it to an older story that had a nugget in it that just won’t leave me alone. When I distilled that story down and focused on the “difficult decision,” I realized the story needs to be completely different to have the emoti...

I’m surprised I haven’t seen anything posted here. Glad I can start the party.

Results have officially started coming in: I’m keeping with my pattern of alternating HM and R.

R for me this time.

Re: Discussion: Q3 Volume 36

The calls I like the least are ones that say LA. wotf004 It's like they only happen when we're awaiting results. wotf020 FYI I've only had Joni call me with an unmasked number one time. The other calls - and remember I've had over a dozen from her now between first calls, second calls, "come b...

Re: Discussion: Q3 Volume 36

I have two things that help me. 1. Work on the next story. 2. Have a plan for what to do with the submission once I get results, whether that's knowing what market to send it to next, or how to tackle revisions when it comes back. I’d echo both, but especially #2 Letting your submission sit for so ...

Re: A Word Re: Revisions

Applying writing advice is like trying to take elements of other recipes to make your favorite dish better. I make a mean Mexican chicken sandwich. Almost a mix between a taco and a torta. I combined elements of different foods I liked in a way that works well together. Writing advice is so broad an...

Re: Moon's SUPER SECRET Bonus Challenge! Vol. 36

My entries to Q1,2 & 3 were all new. R, R and I’m expecting another R. At the moment, there’s no chance I could write 2 a quarter – which isn’t that big an ask. I really liked my Q2, my critiquers really liked my Q2, September C.Fawkes didn’t offer much criticism for the sample of it she read b...

Re: Discussion: Q3 Volume 36

I’ve never been clear on the process with results. I know it varies from time to time, but generally finalists get a call first, correct? Then R’s and HM’s and SHM’s, followed by SF, then finalists are announced (but they’ve already been told, and have taken a blood oath to stay silent)? It varies ...

Re: Discussion: Q3 Volume 36

How short was it*? My HM was under 1,400 words and has quite a dark ending (even though the PoV found what they were looking for). When I submitted, I thought it was my story least likely to get a HM. *The word count isn't a big enough clue for any judges that might see this is it? Just in case, I'...

Re: Discussion: Q3 Volume 36

One separate thing I would recommend is submitting to markets that give good feedback. Many give just form responses, but some are far more forthcoming and helpful, and as such, very valuable to someone trying to hone their craft. Leading Edge is one such--not swift, for sure, but the couple of tim...

Re: Moon's SUPER SECRET Bonus Challenge! Vol. 36

Damn, Wulf. I read Super Duper Moongirl last week. I've been thinking about it since. That's always a sign for me that there's something special about a story, when it sticks with you. And this one is following me around like my own personal moon dawdler. Anyway, I'm late to the party, but I'm in. ...

Sorry to all the R's.

I think this is my 7th quarter, but this may be the first time I've seen a "wave" rather than a mass dropping of R, HM, and SHM together.

How long are these waves typically spaced out?

Sorry if I'm confusing people. The 25 would be for Q1, yes.

The q4 would be Tim Powers and OSC talking about the present tense story they voted on.

In the podcast, Dave talks about still having 25 stories to choose his finalists from (which we know he finished judging beg of last week), so I think Tim and OSC were talking about Q4. Ah. Somehow I must have missed where he said he currently had 25 left. I thought that was a hypothetical when I l...

Re: Discussion: Q1 Volume 36

I meant that Andrew and Wulf's stories were both in present tense, not first person! I haven't had my caffeine yet this morning. I'm guessing that's what they were referring to. Having read the anthology, in my highly biased opinion Wulf's story was the only one that needed to be present tense. I d...

I got my piece to under the 17K limit, but then I read some of the winning stories in Volume 33 and realized several things. 1. my entry may work if it is a longer piece (novel length), but for the purposes of a short story in this contest, it's too complicated and has too many points of view and i...
