Re: Success!

Made my very first ever paying sale last week! It took six months to hear back from the publication and to be honest, I'd completely forgotten I had submitted. Just another reminder, I suppose, that patience is a must in this game. I'll post more info when the publication goes live (sometime early 2...

Re: NEW USERS! INTRODUCE YOURSELVES!

Hello Brad (and everyone ), My name is Andrew L. Roberts. Like all f you, I am a writer and was fortunate to win 3rd place in last year's 4th Quarter. The entire experience was incredible and I hope to share whatever I can with any of you who are writing and submitting your work to the contest. Fee...

Re: NEW USERS! INTRODUCE YOURSELVES!

The best way to 'get better' is to write, write, write. Couldn't agree more! I've always been writing, just not with the intent to publish or submit. But I think ultimately it's unhealthy to keep everything to myself, so I'm gonna start putting it out there and see how it fares in the wild. By the ...

Re: NEW USERS! INTRODUCE YOURSELVES!

Hello WOTF writers! I've been following the contest for a few years, but I have yet to make my first submission. I had all sorts of good reasons - no time, need to get better, no great idea for a short story et al. This quarter I've finally given myself a kick in the behind and am putting the finis...

You guys are awesome! Thanks for the replies here and emails. Re: Websites (This one's not spam, I swear)

I see some people have websites in their signatures. Does anyone have advice about starting one? Hosting or other companies you recommend (or recommend we avoid)? I'll confess to web design being a glaring hole in my tech-saviness. I'd recommend starting with the free offering on Wordpress.com and ...

Re: Goodbye, Publisher's Word Count!

Rules are rules. The easiest way to get disqualified is to not follow them. Worse is to lie and hope the judge doesn't catch it. Writers worry that a bad story will ruin their reputation forever. Every editor I've spoken with says they're too busy to remember bad stories, much less the authors. The...

Re: Jibber Jabber - Q1 - Volume 35

Started my first draft of a story, yesterday. Got 500 words in, got stuck, went to work, and realized I was beginning the story too early while I was halfway through my shift. Had to scrap almost everything I wrote, this morning. Even so, I've gotten started! And I'm (GASP) pantsing my first draft....

Re: NEW USERS! INTRODUCE YOURSELVES!

I don't have anything in the pipeline for short story. Most ideas that start out short end up becoming so complex they won't do in anything shorter than a novel. I started reading short stories quite recently so I suppose I am not yet familiar enough but I am sure I will soon be able to do it. Righ...

Re: Jibber Jabber - Q1 - Volume 35

With my result in from v34-Q4, I submitted a story this morning for the next go-round. Hopefully, the writing is a little more up to snuff with what WotF editors are looking for. Good luck, everyone!

Re: Jibber Jabber - Q4 - Volume 34

Definitely go ahead and submit now! Often we don't get the results for a quarter until after the next quarter is closed - this is almost always true for the 1st quarter in a year and sometimes the second quarter as well. If you win, Joni will just remove your new entry for you. Some people have for...

Re: Jibber Jabber - Q4 - Volume 34

Being a newb to this contest, I have a question: Do most folks typically submit a story for the next quarter before learning the results of the current judging round? I have some more in the pipeline but wasn't sure if I should wait until I receive a "thumbs down."

Re: Go for the novel? Or stick with the short story?

As someone who has a pile of going-nowhere-novels sitting on various hard drives and dusty, printed manuscripts, I support Larry Niven's and Rad Bradbury's advice (among others) that writing short stories allows one to fail faster, and therefore provide the opportunity to improve faster. This year, ...

Re: NEW USERS! INTRODUCE YOURSELVES!

Nice to meet everyone. I'd been equivocating over submitting something to the WotF contest for a couple of years but have recently come to terms with the fact that writers not only write, but they submit. With that in mind, I finally put in my first submission for Q4 2017. I'm not expecting much (sa...
