Re: Almost Success - The "Mixed Feelings" Thread

Just heard back from Deep Magic—I made their second round. They also provided feedback, and I feel like the issues they mentioned can easily be fixed with a few additional lines. And honestly—I’m incredibly happy! This was a story I had seriously considered retiring. I thought there were serious iss...

Re: Discussion: Q2 Volume 37

Got an R. Didn't do that ale/beer thing but now I'm noticing another one of Dave's pet peeves in the first two paragraphs. I'll also post this in the critique forum, but would anyone want to do an exchange?

Re: Discussion: Q2 Volume 37

I haven’t reread my story since submitting it, but I’m pretty sure I used ale and beer interchangeably... oh well, there are other things in it to help establish the atmosphere, so like Dustin said, if I get rejected, I’m sure that wouldn’t be the only reason.

Re: Discussion: Q1 Volume 37

I have permission to announce! wotf059 wotf059 I got third place. Joni called me Monday and I’m still glowing. It feels so darn good to finally get the win. This piece was an HM a year ago. I made a small but crucial change, lopped 10% out of the first couple pages, and now it hits all the right no...

Re: Discussion: Q1 Volume 37

Is there a reason anticipation has spiked today? Joni e-mailed last quarter's HM recipients, where she mentioned she would send out results "next Tuesday." Of course, now we will all question whether "next Tuesday" means "this Tuesday" or "a week from Tuesday.&quo...

Re: Discussion: Q1 Volume 37

Just reread the first few pages of my story and found a typo...rrrgghh

By the way, what time do results usually come out? In the past I’ve gotten the emails in both the afternoon and around 10 pm EST, but I’m working with a small sample size.

Re: Discussion: Q1 Volume 37

I saw the rejection on there before and it's gone now. Disgruntledpeony's probably right--someone probably misinterpreted the email and later realized they had made a mistake. When I first glanced at the subject line, I thought it was saying I had gotten an HM.

Re: Discussion: Q1 Volume 37

Good luck everyone! I wasn't nervous before, but now I am. I'm not sure what to think. It's kind of funny, when I submitted my story for Q1, I was super proud, but now I keep turning it over in my head, thinking of things I could have done better, to the point where I foresee a rejection...

Re: Success!

Daily Science Fiction just accepted one of my stories!

I first got the idea almost two years ago and wrote a total of five different versions, trying to get it right, so I’m extra ecstatic to see it sell!

Congrats to those already in! I think I’ll be reworking mine up till the 30th or 31st

I also just read Ken Loy’s finalist story, Gossamer. Has anyone else on here read it? I really enjoyed it, and it’s free online on his website: https://kenliu.name/stories/gossamer/

Thanks for the compliments (and the good rating wotf007 )! In some ways it's even more exciting than my first story getting published at DSF, like that first one wasn't a fluke or anything

I can't bring myself to twitch on this one. I like the story I wrote, but I took some risks I think will end up hurting my chances. Don't know if it's actually a marketable story--it's just the one that latched on out of nowhere and wouldn't let go. I'm in the same boat as you. I think the idea beh...
