Mine's humour. I'm taking the same route going with humour. If feels like a sort of gamble, given how subjective it can be. Anyone else out there going for humour this quarter? Yes! I am too. At least I hope it is funny. I agree. I think it's risky. They say they want humorous stories but I don't s...

Re: Discussion: Q3 Volume 36

Got an idea last night. Wrote a 1100w first draft this morning. Needs editing down. A flash is not a strong contender for winning WotF, but it is a fresh story and better than no substitution. Thanks for the encouragement guys...and of course, Trevor. Good to hear. I'll tell Trevor that you'll let ...

Thanks for the kind words, TimE & disgruntledpeony I know recovery is most important, but I keep thinking I COULD do more. Maybe I could just grab onto Ol' Trevor's tail and let him drag me through. After all, he IS a big tortoise! Oooh, careful JV, you must have heard never to catch a tortoise...

Re: Discussion: Q3 Volume 36

I'm feeling a little pitiful at the moment. I've plotted the story and started writing it weeks ago. I could get the first draft out in a day, maybe two, if I felt human-ish again. Surgery took more out of me than I expected. I am not throwing in the towel, but as the days drag on, I wonder if that...

Still writing 1st draft. Jeez, I make 3 legged tortoise look fast. I'm with you. Let's get cookin' wotf024 What? You're cooking the tortoise? How do you think he lost a leg in the 1st place? ( And that only happened because dragonchef wouldn't let me have a deep-fried wing.) Anyways, back to the ke...

Hi! I've been lurking in the forum for a few weeks but haven't posted before. I've been writing a long time but only taking it "seriously" for a few years now. I'm a homeschooling mom of 3 (with a 4th on the way) and I also teach at/direct a part-time class program for homeschooling famil...

Good to see others having a decent go. The thing is, the more we write, the more we get out of the way of our writing. Cheers! Getting...

V31 Q2 - rejections reported on May 26th. Perhaps we should be twitching after all. I've looked at Dave's podcast - Hook - check; Fresh idea - check; Engages from page 1 - check; etc - but I've thought that with previous stories. This one was only my second story written specifically for WotF. My la...

Searched for it on Netflix - found out it was on Prime. Damn.
I like everything Gaiman writes. Pratchett - not so much. Sheen and Tennant tend to add something to a part.

TimE hopefully whatever new idea you work on for Q3 will go nice and smooth. And who knows, once that other idea percolates in the back of your brain for a while maybe it will end up almost writing itself at some future date (just with fixes that you don't see right now). Ideas and characters usual...

Having struggled with and finally abandoned my initial idea, it would be easy for me to miss Q3 now. But I think committing to entering each is worthwhile. Maybe I'll have learned how to more quickly recognise when a story needs to be dropped.

I reached a full stop (not literally) yesterday, when I thought this sentence is really suited to end in a paraprosdokian. I congratulated myself on the idea, love using such an odd word and after thinking about it for hours realise I'm not even sure how to pronounce it.

This link was posted on Scribophile earlier. Quite old but still interesting. Average point at which the slushpile reader has decided to reject - Page 3. Provides a reasonable amount of explanation.

Have you noticed that at certain times of day, when sentences are cool, light is low and shadows soft - a certain presence tiptoes through the forums? I like my Q2 entry a lot. Feels my best entry yet. I don't think my Q3 attempts are crap, but if my Q2 entry isn't good enough then it doesn't seem worthwhile completing and entering my Q3. The Q3 I'm struggling with effectively continues the style of my Q2 (very different story). Perhaps I should ...
