Re: Discussion: Q1 Volume 36

I dunno Thought I’ve been getting my HMs or Rs about a month and a week after deadline, but maybe I’m wrong or Q1 is different because of the ceremony and stuff...just wondering.

Re: Discussion: Q2, Volume 36

I'm at 8000 words right now. I intended this for Q1 but I realized I wasn't going to make it, and broke off to revise an R. Like most of my entries, it will likely clock in around 12,000 when finished. I should be up for a swap at the end of the month!

Re: Discussion: Q1 Volume 36

I'd go to an agent because the three biggest sci-fi pubs don't accept unsolicited material. But self-publishing and small press are fine options too. I was told by someone in the industry that if you have a fair number of reviews on Amazon (20+ reviews), then an indie book can help you get a deal. I...

Re: Discussion: Q4 Volume 35

My fourth HM on this one. Really happy because this was a re-entry that had previously been rejected. I changed the opening, which some said was problematic. Getting the HM confirmed that I fixed it correctly. I didn't expect it to win because the story has grown and I had to give it a truncated end...

Re: Discussion: Q1 Volume 36

Amos, I'll probably still be around for Magic in the 4th, v 36. Ha! I really want to get in this Q. I got a silver for 2/35, then an R. That's my year. Not very satisfying. I've got a great story that just needs time and attention. And I've got three months. Fingers crossed! p.s. Thanks Gruffbane. ...

Re: Discussion: Q4 Volume 35

All righty... now that 3rd quarter results are trickling in, I can officially say I'm pretty sure I'm getting an R for Q4. It's a weird story, with an equally odd MC, and a plot geared toward humor over the speculative elements. *exhales* Good to get that off my chest. On to Q1! You are not alone. ...

Re: Discussion: Q3 Volume 35

Same here, 3rd HM.
Brandon Sanderson received his first pub deal the year after his first HM, so I’ll take it!
I think they indeed had more entries this quarter, as some have been saying, because I’m positive this story would have beaten my other HMs.

Re: Discussion: Q3 Volume 35

Red alert! Dave's newsletter just came out, that means he's done with the contest right? Was he talking about my upcoming rejection when he mentioned LSD?
My story WAS pretty trippy. Let me check the crystal ball...and my emails...and my phone.

In truth, Joni stated in yesterday’s email, “I’ll be getting the results tomorrow!”

She didn’t actually say when she’d be giving them to us...

Re: Discussion: Q3 Volume 35

Yes writing the story for Q1 would be so much more productive (and sane) than practicing guessomancy as to time of release and personal results. Still the algorhythms dance in my head, stomping out creative intrusions as I check calls and emails for the fifth time this hour. Excuse me I need to chec...

Re: 4 in 36

I’m in until disqualified! I have a novella coming out from a small press and plan to release a self-pubbed reader magnet sometime in 2019 to support it, but I’ll still be eligible until they exceed a certain amount of sales.

Re: Discussion: Q1 Volume 36

Dustin! Your writing resume for this one contest alone will get you an agent or book deal, as long as you have a 50k word ms ready to go. You should have already disqualified yourself and signed your 10,000 dollar advance! My two HMs carried a surprising amount of weight, so I’ll only be eligible fo...

Re: Discussion: Q4 Volume 35

My first HM was right at 17000, And-my second HM was 12000. My 3rd quarter was about 14000 and is still in the running. The one I just submitted is 16500 and is a revision of one of my 3 rejections, which was originally around 12000. I really hope they don’t change the word count because it’s one of...

Re: Discussion: Q3 Volume 35

I asked Joni if this meant I had gotten above HM and she said no this is the first quarter using a first reader. I think it is likely that getting past her will likely result in at least an HM but can't be sure yet.

Re: Discussion: Q3 Volume 35

I submitted about a month before deadline and received my first pass "still in the running" message at 12:54 AM on September 4th. Two time HM winner and I thought I'd finally broken the HM ceiling and then learned about the new first reader. Pretty cool!
