After 8 submissions I got my first "personalized" rejection from Ellery Queen. This is the letter I've been receiving: Dear Writer: Thank you for giving us the opportunity to read your story. We regret that we are not able to make a personal reply or give criticism on returned manuscripts....

Re: Discussion: Q1 Volume 37
I foolishly waited till the end of the quarter and found myself up battling a cold/the flu/a sinus infection as the clock ticked down. I did submit 4 hours before the deadline, but I am pretty sure my inability to focus and concentrate on writing and editing is going to earn me a big fat R. One upsi...

Re: Common Issues I see on critiques
Oh, there was another promising story that I read this submission period, but the writer didn't use quotation marks! They don't call it a Quarter Pounder with Cheese asked Jules? Vincent shook his head. No, they got the metric system there, they wouldn't know what the f*ck a Quarter Pounder is. Jule...

Re: Common Issues I see on critiques
I'm a first reader for a near-pro-paying market and I had one story in the last round of submissions that sometimes indented for new paragraphs and sometimes didn't. This author also didn't bother creating new paragraphs when a different character spoke. How was the story itself? I have no idea. I d...

Waiting until January is cutting it pretty close. There's a lot to do to get the book ready for publication, even if 9 stories are already set, but the Workshop is a hard deadline.

Re: Discussion: Q3 Volume 36
Honorable Mention here, too. On thing that puzzles me. In my email Joni wrote: "Congratulations!!! You were in the top 2% of all entries." Going by the previous quarter where there were over 200 HMs and higher, that implies over 10,000 entries. Which means Kary has to look at (she certainl...

Re: pseudonyms
We are fiction writers, and spec fic at that. You can be anything you want. I think having a difficult name is an excellent reason to change it. If people can't remember or pronounce your name, how will they tell their friends to buy your books one day? Choose wisely. It will be your brand, and as ...

The first response for this Q has been logged on TGDB. A 51-day wait, answered on August 17th. It begins. I think someone is probably just confused. I woke up this morning and saw an email in my inbox the subject line "Congrats - Your story received Honorable Mention 2nd Quarter" I though...

I ran into trouble with the story I was planning on submitting for Q4. Couldn't get the middle to work. So I set it aside, came up with a new idea, wrote that story instead, and let my WG have a whack at it. Now I'm incorporating some of their feedback and polishing it up.

Re: Discussion: Q2, Volume 36
Is this how the results progress? 1. Joni phones the finalists. Finalists are requested not to disclose their status, so they go semi-silent in the forum. 2. Email notifications of Rs, HMs, and SHMs (If people start reporting receiving these and you didn't get a call from Joni, you know you aren't a...
