Re: Discussion: Q2 Volume 37

Q2 was my first time entering the contest so I'm enjoying the veterans of the contests insights! I actually like my story for Q3 better than Q2, so don't have expectations of winning this quarter, but I'm twitching anyway. My Q4 story is a combination of historical fiction with fantasy so I'm mostl...

Re: Wulf Moon's SUPER SECRETS Workshop & Challenge!

Thanks for the reminders, Ryland! Don’t miss your deadline to WotF today, all! I wrote 5,000 words to Moongirl on the last day of the quarter because I was determined to stick to my goals. You do whatever it takes to get your story in. Winner, winner, chicken dinner! Back to meeting the deadline an...

Re: Discussion: Q4 Volume 37

Okay, this quarter my goal is to be done with my story early, so I won't be racing against time on the last day! (I think I said that in Q3 also :[} )

Happy writing everyone!

Re: Discussion: Q3 Volume 37

After a whirlwind marathon of five 10+ hour days, I finally finished and submitted my story!

A week ago I had NOTHING (besides a few notes and outlines) and didn't think I was going to make it.
Good luck to everyone!!

Q3 for me is coming in, hands on fire, like Neil Young 1977 (DOWN TO THE WIRE) But, I'm loving the story, which I started just a few weeks ago after ditching my first effort. And come Hell or something similar, I'm finishing and submitting it!!!

Good luck to everyone!

Re: Discussion: Q3 Volume 37

After a three week hiatus due to getting laid off, I realized I wasn't interested in the story I started writing for this quarter and instead of grinding it into the ground - I ventured into a new story that was better capturing my attention and mood. I'm only about 1,400 words in, but I enjoyed wh...

Re: Discussion: Q3 Volume 37

Hi everyone. I have noticed this a long time ago, but decided to post here and learn everyone's opinions today. Most of the stories in anthologies 34, 35 and 36 (I don’t know about the previous volumes) have a sad conclusion. Does a story with a tragical ending have a higher chance of winning? See ...

Re: Discussion: Q2 Volume 37

wotf042 First of all, cheers to Kate Julicher for her win in Q1! I'm hopeful one of us will be posting the blue sign this quarter as well. I was just wondering out loud, it took 4 months (which I know is much longer than usual) for the winners to be announced last quarter. I would assume it would ta...

Re: Discussion: Q3 Volume 37

Hello Q3 writers! I wanted to share some advice we received on our Apex call last night with Dave and Robert J Sawyer. Rob made a point to not pull any punches in your story. He added, by that, he meant, don't worry about offending your mom with your story. DON'T HOLD BACK. Write what inspires you a...

Re: Discussion: Q1 Volume 37

I will add this. At his workshop, Dave said an SHM is often finalist quality but something needs fixing before you can win with it. He doesn't want the story to be a finalist yet because then the story is disqualified. He'd like to see it fixed and resubmitted. That's not what's going on for every ...

Re: Discussion: Q1 Volume 37

Digging a little deeper, Dave (and Kary) do a first pass and start sifting into piles. Rs go into the R pile. Read this one goes into another pile. From there, HMs are sorted. Dave's done several Kicks about this, and I think someone recently posted it. Basically he finds a few things that stop it ...

Heirarchy goes as:

HM
SHM
SF
F
Place holders 3.2.1.

Thanks Dragonchef! That helps clear it up for me.

Got you down, Retro! Thanks for the kind words, Kizer and zeeteebeez :) glad you enjoyed the story. Writing it was a blast! Congrats again Leah! Re: Wulf Moon's SUPER SECRET Workshop & Challenge!

A story I felt followed Wulf's secrets very well in Vol 36 was "Catching My Death" by JL George. I was hooked from the first sentence - Jacob caught his death yesterday. And I instantly recognized a speculative element, even though it was somewhat subtle. It was also a quick read, right i...

Re: Discussion: Q1 Volume 37

I'm a first time submitter for Q2 volume 37, so my perspective is ZERO. But if it has been this delayed in Q1 should we anticipate a similar delay in Q2, Q3 and so on? Just curious.

Also, for perspective, when would results normally be posted? thanks again!

Re: Wulf Moon's SUPER SECRET Workshop & Challenge!

Wulf! Thanks again for posting your Super Secrets. I'm not in the group, but I've been studying your methods and have written per these proven guidelines to best of my ability. The best advice for me was the word count. My first draft of my Q2 story was 17K and I have cut it down to around 7,500 aft...

Re: Discussion: Q2 Volume 37

After reading Wulf's post about the average word count for stories selected in the past, I've been slashing words in my story for Q2. Right now I'm at 12K down from 17K at the start of the weekend. Basically I'm rewriting it, narrowing it down to one POV character (did have 2 in alternating chapters...

Re: Cursing and Sexual Situations in WOTF Stories?

LOL! Thanks Chuckt I love that 'suck his own cock' was in a first place story. That's pretty hardcore. (I did love Mara's Shadow also) I had a test pilot in my upcoming submission that says 'fuck' in one scene, I will probably edit that out based on the Forum's advice. But, its hard for me to self-s...
