Re: Discussion: Q3 Volume 36

It occurred to me that now that the rules for pro-ing out are eight cents per word... perhaps some people who would have previously been disqualified entered this quarter. Not Sure how I feel about that, except that I hope they pro-out again soon, lol. I could be wrong, but I would personally assum...

Re: Discussion: Q4 Volume 36

I just barely made it in with 11 minutes to spare. That was an interesting experience trying to write like a crazy person on the last day.I cut it so close, I had to search and replace placeholder names with ones from the internet name generator, lol. https://www.name-generator.org.uk/ It was kind ...

Re: Discussion: Q4 Volume 36

Yeah, a lot of the paper sub markets were that way, both for short fiction and novel pitches. You could either provide a small envelope pre-paid for just the response, or a larger one if you wanted the whole manuscript back. I did the latter when it was difficult for me to print things like that, b...

Re: Discussion: Q4 Volume 36

After much hard work and some loss of sleep this past week, I'm in! Just watched the lady at the post office postmark it for today. Yay! Good luck everyone! Whoa, so retro! Actually, I always loved paper submissions. It gave the whole process of sending in a story a little bit of an event feel. But...

Re: Discussion: Q3 Volume 36

Hmm, if the HM's are in the top 2% this quarter, I am interested in seeing how many there are. It seems like maybe this quarter was a tough one.

Also want to say thanks to Wulf, and everyone else, for always being so encouraging. It really helps.

On to Q4!!!

Re: Discussion: Q3 Volume 36

I didn't place. I assume that is a reject. Oh well! I've never gotten one before, so at least I can say I have now haha. My story was only a couple hundred words under the limit, so I'll just console myself by saying it was too long. Anyhow, I've been pounding out my quarter four all day, so there i...

Re: Discussion: Q3 Volume 36

As a random point, several of his articles talk about putting a hook in the first sentence, two pages, etc. - but I keep wondering if when he says something should be done in the first two pages if he means as they are regularly, or when they are double spaced? haha What an interesting viewpoint. "Orson Scott Card taught us you never want your protagonist to cry, because then your reader won't have to."

That's an interesting point Wulf. I have noticed that while reading and writing but never thought of it in words that way. Thanks for the tip!

I'm almost there! Just need to finish fitting things together and cut some words. I keep ending up with stories that are longer than I intended, but hopefully the plot will make up for the length :)

Re: Almost Success - The "Mixed Feelings" Thread

Does anyone know of a market that likes stories that are lighter than most? Like not quite children's stories, but without many dark elements, though still with a purpose and meaning and all that, especially symbolically. I consider them to be what Dave calls the wonder genre. I'm not sure where to ...

Re: Software, Reviews & Deals

Hey! I'm interested in keeping closer track of my daily word count... does anyone know of a good app, software, ect. that will keep track of how much time I spend writing, how many words I write and delete? And how much I need to write to reach a goal? I'm currently using word. If your suggestion is...

Re: Contest Questions

I have a question about pro markets and the contest - I understand that a market is considered pro if it pays 6 cents a word or more, correct? But what if it only pays 6 cents up to a certain word count, and your story is longer than that? I'm guessing that still counts, but thought I'd ask :) In m...

Re: Discussion: Q4 Volume 35

Hi, I'm new here! I got an Honorable Mention this quarter (my second) so thought I'd join. I have a question - what is the longest word count that usually wins? One of my stories was nearly 17,000, and then I heard that stories that long don't usually win, so I was wondering on average about how lon...
