Re: Moon's SUPER SECRET Bonus Challenge! Vol. 36

Finally, after battling time between life, constant power outages, and getting my paintings done, my Q2 entry's edits are done and I just submitted. I'm in with a fresh one for Q2! Not only that, I also have art entered into Illustrators of the Future for Q2. I'm feeling very productive today.

Re: Moon's SUPER SECRET Bonus Challenge! Vol. 36

Personally, I think his wife should tell him to stay home and rest, but it's not my call. I do hope he takes extra care and makes certain he's fully recuperated. Ditto on this. He knows his limits so I'm sure he won't push it. Just with pneumonia, it's not something to risk travel with, never mind ...

Oh, shoot. Hoping Dave has a speedy recovery. That's a horrible combo. Also hope he doesn't work too hard, taking it easy until he's back on the up.

Re: Moon's SUPER SECRET Bonus Challenge! Vol. 36

The Rule of Three was a brilliant story! I still think about it whenever I buy groceries. How dark am I? I do some craft and sewing, making my own stuff but is it enough to offset some of the dark?

It's a story I think everyone should read.

Re: Discussion: Q1 Volume 36

Talk about rejectomancy. I thought he signed all his emails with "Charlie". Excuse me while I hide in the cupboard and freak out about what this means. I really should start subbing more, especially to F&SF. My dream pub to be in. Aim for the stars! Rejections eat at the soul and this ...

Re: Moon's SUPER SECRET Bonus Challenge! Vol. 36

Ha. Yeah, that's the biggest hurdle for me if I win. Talking to people, even familiar ones, is a challenge. I reckon the 24-hour story isn't quite as daunting as we may initially think. I've been using the SF London 48-hour challenge for a few years now, not subbing, just as a personal motivator to ...

Re: Discussion: Q1 Volume 36

LOL at expectomancy! Brilliant. And definitely, Jest. Personalised Rs are the best thing next to, well, acceptances. But it again goes into the every editor having different tastes. Still, some wonderful warm fuzzy validation, especially from top editors like Finlay. Got a nice one from Joe Stech on...

Re: Discussion: Q1 Volume 36

Did not know that about F&SF rejections. Got a few "didn't quite win me over" from Finlay. Now I feel better about those rejections. Awaken the rejectomancy! No, don't, but it wants to so bad.

Re: Moon's SUPER SECRET Bonus Challenge! Vol. 36

On one hand, failing to make things worse doesn't up the investment of both reader and character, there's a lack of suspense and incentive to continue. On the other hand, I think we all have a nook in our brains that feed on Schadenfreude, partly for that alone and partly because it taps into our em...

Re: Moon's SUPER SECRET Bonus Challenge! Vol. 36

Tension mounting up as the protagonist tries to solve the problem, and fails. Then mounts up again, and fails. Then takes that knowledge learned and figures out a better way, and fails. And then in a do or die climax, tries and succeeds, and learns something about himself or herself in the process....

Re: Moon's SUPER SECRET Bonus Challenge! Vol. 36

I said MOCK-UP, as in make it look like pages in a science fiction book. Like text in a fantasy magazine. You see, we writers get used to reading in the code, Courier, double spaced, one inch margins, etc., etc. And it's great for editing--space between lines to mark changes, monospaced font helps ...

Re: Discussion: Q2, Volume 36

Perhaps looking at the overall character arc and narrowing it to the strongest development might help keep the story well below 17k? A basic character arc of conflict, agency, consequence, and resolution. If there's good room left, and the story needs to, it should be much easier to fill up after th...

Re: Moon's SUPER SECRET Bonus Challenge! Vol. 36

I laughed so hard at the ST example. Well done, sir. Well done. As tempting as it is to delve into the murky waters of info-dumping, sometimes we just need to realise that our audience (first reader and judges in this case) know quite a bit about SFF and worlds and are more than capable of making de...

Wow! Congrats, Wulf, and may there be many more congrats coming! Been stalking Dave's blog, and read through so many posts before. All signed up for new ones. I see your 5th Element reference and I appreciate it. wotf022 Almost as much as the Super Secrets themselves.

Plus, as an active commenting member, you're in the running for a critique on that one this Q.

Sold.

I should let it breathe in any case, see if there's something time picks up to improve it, haha. Oh, time, you wonderfully frustrating thing, you.

I'm saying congrats to all who subbed because, like RSchibler said, it's a win in and of itself.

Nice going, Time! I'm with you there, almost ready to send it off for Q2. Haven't even thought of what to write for Q3 yet. Need to figure that out soon.

And happy new year's!

Moon's SUPER SECRET #8: Kill "as you know, Bobs" in your story! What's an "as you know, Bob?" It's authorial intrusion, done through a character to make it seem okay. You think that by using this method, you're being sneaky getting information into your story that your reader mi...

Re: Moon's SUPER SECRET Bonus Challenge! Vol. 36

Due to the enthusiasm Moon is showing (and the hallowed halls echoes, by the way congrats on the win, Moon!), I'm creeping out from lurk-mode to join this. My Q1 entry is already in and it's technically a fresh story (in that it was written to sub to WotF but wasn't ready for last quarter and thus r...

Already subbed to Q1 a piece I'd been writing and working on initially to sub to v35 Q4 but it wasn't ready yet so here I am for v36 instead.

Re: NEW USERS! INTRODUCE YOURSELVES!

'Ollo! I'm Anike Kirsten, long-time stalker (in cyber time, so about 2 months) recently signed up and figured I probably should hop in with the amount of time I spend on the forum already. I'm from South Africa, living in a semi-desert area. Mostly into SF but I'm getting more into stories that blur...
