Kaigal,

My winning story was fantasy. If you write fantasy, then submit that to the contest!

Never send thank you e-mails. It clogs up e-mail boxes. However, do respond promptly to any correspondence they send YOU. You can thank them then if you'd like.

Re: NEW USERS! INTRODUCE YOURSELVES!

The key is to be arrogant enough when you're submitting to think that your work can stand against the best out there, but have enough humbleness after you hit the "send" button to re-examine your work to find out how you could do better next time.

Re: NEW USERS! INTRODUCE YOURSELVES!

For me, I subbed for the Jun30th cut off, and found out around September 7th or so that I was a finalist. I found out sometime around Oct18th or so that I'd won... maybe as late as November. Re: NEW USERS! INTRODUCE YOURSELVES!

It sounds like we do agree actually?

I didn't say to rewrite it after a single rejection...rather if it's constantly being rejected odds are it's the story, not the market.

Re: NEW USERS! INTRODUCE YOURSELVES!

Yeah, I dunno. A rejection COULD mean nothing, but that doesn't mean that it DOES mean nothing. Sure your story might be wrong for that magazine, but it could also suck. If you're in doubt, submit it somewhere that gives feedback (you can find a list off Duotrope), or better yet get a pro-published ...

Re: Success!

Howdy, You don't get disqualified until you have four pro sales >in print<. Further, Contest Administration has said in the past that the SFWA qualifying markets list should be used to determine eligibility. I've made a bunch of pro-paying sales, but since I haven't made four to the SFWA qualifying ...

Just spotted this thread. Big congrats to Alastair! That's a market I wouldn't mind cracking myself one day!
