Re: Wulf Moon's SUPER SECRET Workshop & Challenge!

If it helps you both (and feel free to ignore me if you knew this already of course) that particular form means that your opening didn't work for him. Work on your hooks! :) I also got the same speedily-received form rejection on the story I sent out. I'm glad to know it's the hook that might be th...

Re: Wulf Moon's SUPER SECRET Workshop & Challenge!

Here's my Assignment! (Sorry for being late!) ASSIGNMENT 1. How old was Martin when he submitted his first story to a pro magazine? What happened? What didn't he realize? He was 14. He got rejected -- with a personal rejection, but at the time he didn't realize that meant anything. 2. Did he quit wr...

Re: Wulf Moon's SUPER SECRET Workshop & Challenge!

Checking in again! Short story #2 is submitted to a market. (Story #1 was already submitted to WotF.) I also just sent this month's Flash piece out to a market. And I launched out one of my krakens from last quarter that had been returned to the nest. I have a few krakens still awaiting some editing...

Re: Wulf Moon's SUPER SECRET Workshop & Challenge!

Checking in... My flash for March is done! (Written and KYD'd and built back up, based on the old "Wolf Moon" prompt that I hadn't had a chance to do until now.) Second short story is written and currently out for feedback... but I'll be sure to make the deadline. I'll check in with an upd...

Re: Wulf Moon's SUPER SECRET Workshop & Challenge!

I'm in for Quarter 2! I just submitted short story #1 to the Writers of the Future contest tonight. I'm still working on finishing my second short story for this quarter and my flash for this month, but I currently have 2 partial flash pieces that could both possibly be KYD'd and then built back up ...

Re: Wulf Moon's SUPER SECRET Workshop & Challenge!

When you're stuck, read it the night before. When you go work on it the next day, often your subconscious helps you out because it worked on the problem through the night, just as Dave points out. Stuck again? Go take a shower. Hot running water seems to be hypnotic, and I've had many ideas come to...

Re: Wulf Moon's SUPER SECRET Workshop & Challenge!

I also have a question about the rules of the challenge -- I am also doing the bonus challenge (1 flash per month). Does that 1 flash per month have to be based on a KYD exercise from that same month? If I wanted to do a KYD prompt I never got to from a previous month, and then build that up into my...

Re: Wulf Moon's SUPER SECRET Workshop & Challenge!

This is why we read many stories that don't grab our hearts, that don't make us care about the protagonist. The story is technically correct, all 7 points, but has no heart. It's missing the emotional element, and that's wrapped up inside the protagonist, and the writer must show us what motivates ...

Re: Wulf Moon's SUPER SECRET Workshop & Challenge!

Reporting in:

I just finished my flash for February, based on the Vital Flaw prompt. Written, KYD'd, and built back up again. It turned out to be an odd little story... Actually, I'd love for someone to read/crit it for me if anyone has time. It's about 1200 words.

Thank you for the info, Alicia! Thank you for sharing this, Becky! Re: Wulf Moon's SUPER SECRET Bonus Challenge!

Genre diversity can be a boon, but has drawbacks. It can be really helpful if a particular genre dries up, but also means your backlist isn't as long for readers that are only interested in particular genres. Ideas for diversification: Hit more genres, foreign rights, translations, self-pub, game t...

Re: Wulf Moon's SUPER SECRET Bonus Challenge!

I built my Blood Sucker story back up to just under 900 words... I hope that's close enough to the 1000! KYD exercise definitely helped clarify the story... there's more depth to it now and yet it's still 500 words less than my first draft before the KYD. wotf017
