Re: Discussion: Q3 Volume 36

Searched for it on Netflix - found out it was on Prime. Damn. I like everything Gaiman writes. Pratchett - not so much. Sheen and Tennant tend to add something to a part. We are opposites. Love Pratchett but Gaiman is very hit or miss for me. But Good Omens is delightful so I guess together is good.

Online Workshop Thread

Would anyone be interested in doing a sort of online informal workshop type of thread together? I was thinking if people were interested we could use a couple of podcasts from Writing Excuses as a basis (Season 10 https://writingexcuses.com/category/season/season-10/). Then share our thoughts and or...

Re: 4 in 36

Ideas and characters usually show up somewhere else. I'm a firm believer in recycling. Haha :) Me too actually. Unfortunately sometimes during revisions I recycle in a great sentence or idea just a paragraph or two before it originally appeared while thinking it was a fresh idea to add in that spot...

Re: 4 in 36

TimE hopefully whatever new idea you work on for Q3 will go nice and smooth. And who knows, once that other idea percolates in the back of your brain for a while maybe it will end up almost writing itself at some future date (just with fixes that you don't see right now).

Re: 4 in 36

I wish I had planned around doing this. But I missed submitting anything in Q2 because I hadn't really started participating or giving much thought to how valuable it could be to work with that kind of goal in mind. Besides I had pretty much all my finished stories out on submission at that time. Bu...

Re: Discussion: Q3 Volume 36

I don't think anyone could predict what would happen next in my Q2 entry. I didn't know as I was writing it! But my Q3 ideas are too predictable. Think I need to start again. Predictable delivered in a unique way with characters people care about can work very well (in my opinion at least). I've en...

Re: Discussion: Q3 Volume 36

Is it bad that I just want it to be July so I can enter for Q4 because maybe that would inspire me to get my rear in gear to make sure I have something for next Q1. Although I admit I'd really like it if I could just win Q3 or Q4 then anything after that would just go into the submission rounds :)

Re: Story mentally plotted, but can't get it out

Ursula LeGuin talked about something that comes to my mind with what you said. She said sometimes if it isn't flowing/working it could be an issue with the tense or it could be you are writing 1rst person and you need to be 3rd or vice versa etc. I am almost certainly messing up what she said. But I...

Re: Helpful Writing Links

I think I haven't seen the recordings of Brandon Sanderson's lectures at BYU in this thread yet: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLH3mK1NZn9QqOSj3ObrP3xL8tEJQ12-vL . Awesome stuff! And if you are after other Sanderson content with a variety of other fantastic authors https://writingexcuses.co...

Re: Contest Questions

I mean the prize money would be great but this really sounds like much more than just a "cherry on top".

By the way Wulf Moon - I really enjoyed your story in V 35.

Re: Contest Questions

This is certainly putting the cart before the horse but I have a question about the prizes. It looked to me (after doing a little searching) - that there is a workshop for 12 writers and 12 illustrators - I assume that is the top 3 each quarter. But despite assuming I have the following questions if...

Re: Discussion: Q1 Volume 36

Well done to that HM to SF story - and thanks for sharing (gives folks like me hope)

And nice job on the finalist - and someone noted that is two in a row?? That must feel downright fantastic!

Kudos to both of you.

Re: Discussion: Q3 Volume 36

I got that V35 and read the intro and realize that my Q3 piece doesn't really have much of a chance I suspect. I still think it is a good story but just isn't likely right for this particular space. But maybe it will be good enough for an HM. So that is my hope right now - not the right fit but with...

Re: NEW USERS! INTRODUCE YOURSELVES!

Hi All, Relatively new here as well (also got caught up in the technical issues). I submitted for the first time in Q1 and got an HM! Submitted a different story for Q3. And have revised the one from Q1 after gathering some feedback and I have to say I thought it was good when I submitted it origina...

Re: Discussion: Q1 Volume 36

My first submission was for this contest. I was happy to get an honorable mention. I have a different story in for Q3 and am editing this one for Q4 (had some good feedback from other sources and I know it can be a saleable piece once I work through these changes - even if it doesn't make it big in ...

Re: Contest Questions

Thanks!

Honestly I was headed onto the revisions path with this story anyway. I feel like it has great potential (that I thought I had fulfilled but...). And I've gotten a little bit of feedback from other sources that I think will take it up several notches!

Re: Contest Questions

I thought I saw this mentioned in some other thread but I wanted to confirm.

Can you revise a previously entered story and enter it in another quarter if it wasn't a winner? Does it matter if it was an Honorable Mention?
