And on the subject of formatting, for all those outside the USA, remember to change your paper size to USLetter. Dont use us legal. It's different. Also, it you're using metric, set your margins to 2.54 cm. ... lastly let your default language to usa english. This will highlight all the words with ...

EXACTLY LIKE SHUNN'S Yes! I've been submitting using Shunn's wotf007 ... but at some point the para intents dropped off, so will fix that from this point forward. Edit (after reading next post): ah, no indent is good then ... lol One thing I've found useful is to write the frist draft in a more con...

I'm a bit behind already (the story of my life) ... just read the Cooper Nickel discussion on flash (http://copper-nickel.org/a-brief-symposium-on-flash/) Had to LOL when reading this part by Patricia Colleen Murphy: "When it was my turn to read he was floored and loved the piece. He said, &quo...

Re: Moon's SUPER SECRET Bonus Challenge!

For Peter Glen's new 250 revision: This is good, and thank you for doing the extra work--I did not expect that, but I'm happy you went at it. Any excuse to write ;) Glad it worked, ty! And just a note to all. Someone mentioned privately if they could use these seeds for contest stories, since they ...

Re: Moon's SUPER SECRET Bonus Challenge!

I really enjoyed this exercise ... a challenge that has opened my eyes to the benefit of fewer words (will never approach my first edit the same way again!) ... the 250-word version is a rewrite in a style you might find in late 19th century adventure prose. Theme: Deception Title: General Firth 500...

995 words done ... keeping with deception although the setting couldn't be further from the last attempt ... will let it sit for a day before the word-cull.

Re: Moon's SUPER SECRET Bonus Challenge! Vol. 36

re: #33 ... my first attempt is a fail ... just can't cut it (not even down from 1200 to 1000). The reason, I think, is that the story is split over four scenes and is 80% dialogue. I will try again in a few days with something more pliable. But still, have learned something here, even with a fail.

So we do a flash piece and distill it down to 250 words...sounds fun, have been planning on writing one flash a week as an exercise. I'm in for v37 too :)

Re: Discussion: Q3 Volume 36

To be honest, my Q3 entry is off the radar for me as I'm sure it will fail based on reading the forum and listening to the podcasts...when I read 'middle school and up', I thought that anything other than children stories were ok to enter...nothing crazy in the story, but I don't think schools would...

Congratulations on being a semi-finalist in the first quarter of 2015. The competition was tough, and your story had a lot to offer. On the level of worldbuilding and writing alone, this was one of the strongest stories in the quarter—perhaps the very strongest. I so wanted to make it a finalist......

I've got one story done with another is almost done. A third story that I started first probably needs a couple of arcs to make it work so not quite a short story. So, tossing up over whether I choose a solid middle-school & up piece for Q4 or tempt the gods and submit the sci-fi horror?? Decisi...

Ray Bradbury would have been 99 years old today. No one influenced my early writing style more than him. I adore his poetic prose. In memory of the man, I give you this: “Do what you love, and love what you do. Nothing else matters. Love, you see, is everything,” he said. “If you want to paint, or ...
