I just got back a pretty harsh critique from a good friend. The funny part is, I just spent two days doubting the story and my ability to finish it (and my value as a writer...and human, but whatever). When it finally came together last night, I was thrilled. So, I looked at the issues he brought up...

I finally think I hit on my idea for this quarter. I just need to finish a revision I'm working on first.

Normally, as soon as I don't win here (I can't call an HM or SHM a loss), I look for possible markets for the story. This quarter's SHM touches on issues of voting (but not contested elections) and I'm thinking that I might want to let things cool down a bit before I send it out. Thoughts?

Anyone else get a sense of emptiness when you're between stories? Like, what do I obsess about now? Probably what am I going to write about next, but that isn't quite the same.

Submitted my Q2 HM to a market yesterday. Finished a story tonight and sent it to my writing group. Must build momentum.

I don't need to use the breadth of Tarantino's language. I'm looking at language such as that found in MLK's "I Have a Dream" speech.

Not sure if this is the write place to ask this, but here goes. What about works set in time periods where current socially acceptable terms would be anachronistic, but the terms of the day are now considered unacceptable?

Thank you, Beth Powers. I was positive the results used to come in waves, but no one else seemed to think so. Kind of liked it that way better. Oh well, back to a draft.

Got an Honorable Mention this time. The email mentioned that an Honorable Mention puts the story in the top 2%. Oof! That is a tough target! Keep your nibs wet and flowing.
