Re: How Short Is Too Short?
Like Preston said, the shortest was "Just Don't". One short page. I still can't figure out why it won, because the story itself made no sense.

Re: How *NOT* to Handle Rejection
I occasionally hear about something like that and am always astonished. Maybe there should be something like the Darwin awards, for writers who remove themselves from the 'gene pool' of writers through their own stupidity.

Re: Success!
And I have news of my own as well. Achievement unlocked: after several attempts I finally managed to have a story accepted by Grievous Angel. Bonus: it was the first of my micro-stories (100 words) to sell. Extra bonus: this ended a dreary dry spell of over two months interspersed with a lot of exc...

Re: Five Minute Rant
What the hell. Send your best story my way and let's see if I can give you some input. Just keep in mind that I have yet to make a pro sale, only semi pro's. And those 2 Finalists. But I have gotten good critiques on my Semi's, and one from a major editor, so at least I know what makes a critique he...

Re: Five Minute Rant
My 2 cents, LD. Take the "good points" your critiques pointed out, and strengthen them. Also, re-read a story you wrote a year ago. Do you see things you would do better now? If so, your writing IS getting better, and you're mostly suffering from lack of self confidence. Neil Gaiman confes...

Who are these people who say Stupefying Stories never gets round to publishing you? Let them stand up and come forth, I say! Yea! Come the four corners of the world in arms and we shall shock them! Very well. Enough said. By way of proof I offer All of the People, All of the Time a short story by y...

Re: Five Minute Rant
Thanks Dawn. I have stopped throwing things now. My second query to Straeon produced a reply saying that he thought he told me in April that he didn't want it. This is good, because I discovered upon re-reading that the story could be really pretty good with a little work. It's out again to a bette...

Re: Writer's Group
There was a small writers group several years ago, that one of the Finalists invited me and a few others from this Forum to. He invited people who'd showed commitment to their writer careers, usually with long histories with WOTF or other venues. We fizzled out after 5-6 years when most of us either...

Re: Almost Success - The "Mixed Feelings" Thread
Well I'm pretty excited. Just got a personal rejection from F&SF, and it's my first personal outside of Writers of the Future! I know it's technically still a rejection, but it makes me feel like people are finally starting to take notice of my writing. wotf007 You're getting close! On the scal...

Amazing I know have five "sells" on smashwords. One of my story sets is free for July. I didn't do anything to advertise it special. Another set has been free for over a year and nothing. I have done this before and nothing then either but now people are noticing it on smashwords announce...

Re: What's a good conversion rate when submitting to markets
I truly think it's all of the above, except anonymous subs. I've heard several editors ( Stan Schmidt, Ginger Buchanan, Dean Wesley Smith and others) say good covers and persistent submissions might edge a story over other submissions. But as Matt says, it still has to be a good story, so quality tr...

Ooh, hlf is our mystery person. Is it really a person? Perhaps the writing world is being taken over by genius aliens who will sweep WOTF, thereby creating a new reality in the world and finally guide humanity to a peaceful existence.

Jason, yes, you can keep it up. You'll keep getting better the more you read and write, even if sometimes you write garbage. You know, learning from mistakes and all that. I consider my BIGGEST mistake as a newbie writer, even bigger than quitting for a few years, was coasting. After my first Final...

Re: What are the best ways for a finalist to start their car
Well, guys, you just inspired me to submit my best piece to the Mag of SF&F instead of submitting it to 4th QTR WOTF. I've come to realize I only want a few pro credits so agents will read my manuscripts. WOTF is positioned as the contest that will launch your career, but after reading the real...
