Re: Jibber Jabber - Q1 - Volume 34

Jeremy, WOW! Super Congrats!

Inky, hang in there! The judge's feedback is a new thing, I think. I would have loved that for my Finalists, but, alas, it wasn't so.

Re: Jibber Jabber - Q1 - Volume 34

Hello Jareb and Hire, and welcome! I've hung out here for many years, and it has helped my writing tremendously. Plus it's a good gang of folks. At least this week I will not need to twitch with anticipation/dread, because there won't be judging happening. Have you also been following the blog? This...

Re: How *NOT* to Handle Rejection

I occasionally hear about something like that and am always astonished. Maybe there should be something like the Darwin awards, for writers who remove themselves from the 'gene pool' of writers through their own stupidity.

Re: Success!

And I have news of my own as well. Achievement unlocked: after several attempts I finally managed to have a story accepted by Grievous Angel. Bonus: it was the first of my micro-stories (100 words) to sell. Extra bonus: this ended a dreary dry spell of over two months interspersed with a lot of exc...

Great post, Dustan. And you did Algis's workshop?! No wonder so many WORDOS won!
Like you, this contest has been my kryptonite. Focusing mostly on it, while downplaying other markets. It has kept me going, but getting some semi-pro creds has me expanding my horizons.

Silver HM, my fist one of those (can somebody please tell me what silver HM really means, and is it sterling silver, or pure silver, and what's the current price per troy ounce?). And does it work on werewolves? Side note: With the Surname Moon, you should win by default...in my humble opinion. Tha...

Well, I still think so, so out it goes to F &SF. wotf004

Re: Jibber Jabber - Q3 - Volume 33

I'm feeling strangely calm at the moment which is somewhat worrying actually. A few weeks back I was at the local mall with my wife and daughter and a group of kids ran by shouting "Shots fired!" I thought this to be very curious behavior. Meanwhile my wife was freaking out so we went int...

What the hell. Send your best story my way and let's see if I can give you some input. Just keep in mind that I have yet to make a pro sale, only semi pro's. And those 2 Finalists. But I have gotten good critiques on my Semi's, and one from a major editor, so at least I know what makes a critique he...

Re: Five Minute Rant

My 2 cents, LD. Take the "good points" your critiques pointed out, and strengthen them. Also, re-read a story you wrote a year ago. Do you see things you would do better now? If so, your writing IS getting better, and you're mostly suffering from lack of self confidence. Neil Gaiman confes...

Re: Jibber Jabber - Q3 - Volume 33

He said on fb that he made it to Brisbane. Then, "Now I need to finish judging for Writers of the Future today!" I congratulated him for getting caught up on judging. He said there's a lot of stories. "I'm getting done fast, though." And it's thrilling to have a conversation with...

Re: Jibber Jabber - Q3 - Volume 33

Yep, he just commented on fb, in response to my comment, that each quarter has more and more entries, so it takes longer. But he says now he's moving fast.

Maybe this means they're all rejects, and he only reads the first page of each story.

Re: Jibber Jabber - Q3 - Volume 33

I'm out. Got my rejection in the wee hours of the morning. I had thought this was my last quarter of remaining eligibility, but when I checked with Joni to be sure she said I'm still good for Q4. So...twitchiness for most of the rest of the year ensues. This time I was sort of numb to rejection. My...

Re: Five Minute Rant

Thanks Dawn. I have stopped throwing things now. My second query to Straeon produced a reply saying that he thought he told me in April that he didn't want it. This is good, because I discovered upon re-reading that the story could be really pretty good with a little work. It's out again to a bette...
