Re: Wulf Moon's SUPER SECRET Bonus Challenge!

I'm putting 10 first because I have a unique story: 10. How can you target a good agent? In sales, my objective was always to get a face to face with the decision maker, never take no from their gatekeepers. With big agents, face to face is just as important. How can you make that happen? (Again, do...

Re: Wulf Moon's SUPER SECRET Bonus Challenge!

Guys, I've had some unforeseen health issues crop up. I'm going to have to pull myself from the challenge. I'll still be around. I'll be cheering. But I have to focus on my health for a bit. Wish you all the best, and I'll try to keep up...but at this point, I'm admitting to myself it probably won'...

Re: Wulf Moon's SUPER SECRET Bonus Challenge!

A reminder for those in this year's Wulf Pack: If you send me your submission story in two weeks, on Dec 25, I will copy-edit it on Dec 26-27. Please PM me this week for my e-mail address if you don't already have it. I won't have time before Dec 26, so there's no benefit to sending your story early...

Re: Wulf Moon's SUPER SECRET Bonus Challenge!

My big achievement of the week was that I actually got the first draft of one of my fresh stories for this quarter written! I'm way behind schedule for where I hoped I'd be at this point, but I do have one story ready to edit and polish before the end of this month! I'm still hoping I can get the s...

Re: Wulf Moon's SUPER SECRET Bonus Challenge!

I finished the first draft of my second story for the quarter. I don't love it, so I'm hoping my first story gets a response soon from the market it's been held at for the last six weeks. Then I can submit the story I'm most passionate about to WotF (unless it's accepted, which would be even better!...

Re: Moon's SUPER SECRET Bonus Challenge!

I believe that advice came from Donald Maass's THE EMOTIONAL CRAFT OF FICTION. If you haven't read it yet, read it. The advice and exercises in there really took my ability to make people feel things to a different level. I went to amazon to buy this, and apparently I already did! Back before I eve...

Re: Moon's SUPER SECRET Bonus Challenge!

Thanks, Officer. I know how that happened. SwiftPotato (Lisa) is a member that would have the designation Officer in my gaming guild, TheForestGuard.com. So there's the association. And you're in good company to be associated with her. : ) Thanks for your good input to the question, however! I was ...

Re: Moon's SUPER SECRET Bonus Challenge!

Officer, could you give us a brief bullet list of those lightbulbs Dave set off for you? It helps all to see the highlights that helped you! You meant this for SwiftPotato, but I won't leave you hanging. The best advice I've gotten which we haven't covered directly is the idea of implication. It's ...

Re: Moon's SUPER SECRET Bonus Challenge!

Man, I am itching to send my Q4 off to another market, but I'm still waiting on my results...I'd like to wait until semifinalists are informed to email Joni and ask about it so I don't bother her while she's still busy. I didn't want to jinx it in case you already heard, but I'm hoping for you to g...

Re: How to Get the Most From Critiques

Thanks for kicking this off! I've also found around four readers is best for me in short fiction. I have more experience in non-fiction, where I found one peer plus the editor was sufficient. I like to send a new draft to each reader in sequence. Then I can make edits between and see how my changes ...

Re: Moon's SUPER SECRET Bonus Challenge!

Congrats on everyone's participation in Q4! So impressed by the group. Liz - we are rooting for you. Best of luck! For the rest of us, let's see if we can turn these into sales elsewhere. This seems like a good week to do it, as submissions should taper into the holiday and slush readers might have ...

Re: Moon's SUPER SECRET Bonus Challenge!

Surely this particular magazine already has many excellent stories to choose from. Would it not come across as unprofessional, as...

Re: Moon's SUPER SECRET Bonus Challenge!

Confession time: I missed my deadline. My target magazine closed and I MISSED THE DEADLINE. I'd thought it was open through the end of the month but I was wrong and that smarts. So...I signed up for their reminder emails. Ugh, that's awful! Moon might have a different opinion on this (which I would...

The twitching is strong. I watched some of Netflix's new series Love, Death & Robots to distract myself. There's an episode called "When the Yogurt Took Over," based on a short story. Not exactly ice cream, but John Scalzi beat us to it! What are we supposed to write now?! On the plus ...

Re: Discussion: Q4 Volume 36

As a Canadian, I can assure you we have lots of ice cream flavours available in stores, at least where I live. Cheese, we seem to only make cheddar and Mozzarella, but there is a huge variety of imported cheeses, even if they cost a bit more. Oh, good! Knowing that makes my day. Really! A temporary...

It's only been in the last years that Ben and Jerry's has been available in NZ. But I refuse to pay $14 for the tiny scoop. Oh, now that's horrifying. Practically qualifies as a war crime. I hope you get at LEAST sixteen liters of Phish Food while you're here! $14 is insane. New Zealand's biggest i...

I'm in it for the workshop! At lunch yesterday, I felt my phone vibrate: BLOCKED. I rushed outside, coatless, into the snow to answer, and... and... AND it was a scam robo-call. Now the machines know I pick up and keep calling from blocked numbers. Should fortune favor me, Joni's going to voicemail....

Re: Moon's SUPER SECRET Bonus Challenge!

SwiftPotato, I liked Orson Scott Card's book Characters and Viewpoint . His other book, specifically for SFF, is also good. Once I understood "free indirect discourse" (Card may not use that term), third person became much easier to write. Basically, it's the style of seamlessly going in a...

EDIT: If you're just between past and present tense, I feel like you should do what sounds better. Sorry, I initially interpreted the dilemma as first person present vs third person past. Previous comments still apply, sort of... It's better if you can explain why it's better. Is there an objective ...
