Re: Wulf Moon's SUPER SECRETS Workshop & Challenge!

This week's KYD prompt made me think of a bloated, vague story start from several months ago that got shelved because I had no idea where it was going. The theme of "Go For Blood" fit perfectly so I figured this was an opportunity to wrangle the beast down to its core. Here is my attempt: ...

Re: Wulf Moon's SUPER SECRETS Workshop & Challenge!

Nicely put, Ryland. And once again, I am just so in awe of your submissions record. Look behind you. See that little speck off in the distance? That's me trotting along in your dust :) Also, you reminded me of something I meant to say in my assignment piece. After first trying to incorporate "a...

Re: Wulf Moon's SUPER SECRETS Workshop & Challenge!

FINAL ASSIGNMENT: In addition to the tremendous amount of growth in my writing (particularly structure) via the super secrets, I’ve increased my productivity and submissions. Beyond WotF, I had 8 submissions (between four stories) to respectable markets in 2019. This year, beyond WotF, I already ha...

Re: Wulf Moon's SUPER SECRETS Workshop & Challenge!

Sorry I am just getting this in. For some totally bizarre reason, I thought today was the deadline. Apologies. My first 250: Soulmates Instead of death, the electroshock device delivered a pathetic, tongue-tingling buzz. Karzen Waters, unemployed factory sweeper, sagged against hotel glass separatin...

Re: Wulf Moon's SUPER SECRETS Workshop & Challenge!

Hey guys! It’s been a while since I’ve popped in the thread here. Truth be told, I’ve felt a lot like a failure in being unable to keep up. Every time I looked at the thread for about six months, I’ve felt guilty. I thought at the start of the year I’d be able to hack it. But life changed. So glad ...

Re: Wulf Moon's SUPER SECRETS Workshop & Challenge!

Whew!! Checking in with 30 minutes of the quarter to spare . . . because apparently I like to terrify myself at the end of each quarter. Both a fresh submission to WotF as well as a fresh story to Escape Pod (thereby making their deadline as well). Thanks to everyone who made comments on either one ...

Re: Wulf Moon's SUPER SECRETS Workshop & Challenge!

StarReacher gives us Stephen King for her opening line discovery, and the details are incredible: “Jim Trusdale had a shack on the west side of his father’s gone-to-seed ranch, and that was where he was when Sheriff Barclay and half a dozen deputized townsmen found him, sitting in the one chair by t...

Re: Wulf Moon's SUPER SECRETS Workshop & Challenge!

I chose “Mother of Invention” by Nnedi Okorafor, who creates intrigue in 121 words. “It was a beautiful sunny day, and yet Anwuli knew the weather was coming for her. She paused on the lush grass in front of the house, purposely stepping on one of the grass’ flowers. When she raised her foot, the st...

Re: Wulf Moon's SUPER SECRETS Workshop & Challenge!

For my story, I chose The Warden by Kai Wolden from vol. 35. In The Warden by Kai Wolden, suspense and mystery swirl in the first three paragraphs of the opening. In the first paragraph, we learn of a young child living through a spreading sickness. “I remember terrible heat, terrible cold, a drifti...

Re: Wulf Moon's SUPER SECRETS Workshop & Challenge!

Opening Scene Assignment The opening provides an incredible amount of information with the title as the first hook. You know there is some sort of heroine on the moon, even though we are not sure yet what a Moon Dawdler is. The first paragraph identifies Dixie, her age, impatience to be older, a sp...

Re: Wulf Moon's SUPER SECRETS Workshop & Challenge!

Over the last week, I've said "Character is action" in multiple critiques. This is a quote from Dan Wells, and his seminar on Creating Character Arcs at SSWS, about the importance of having active characters. I asked Wulf for permission to post a write-up on the concept, so here I go. Cha...

Re: Wulf Moon's SUPER SECRETS Workshop & Challenge!

Re: Wulf Moon's SUPER SECRETS Workshop & Challenge!

Star Reacher, just a thought. Disclaimer: i don't hold a Ph.D. in Ping-Pong Dialogue , but, what if you save the two questions you pose at the beginning of your dialogue, and substitute them at the end? This way your BIG REVEAL is last and carries more punch. Best, Retro wotf008 Thanks for the idea...

Re: Wulf Moon's SUPER SECRETS Workshop & Challenge!

Thanks for the comments Moon. I've been following all the other examples and realized that mine was a bit different, but had posted before looking at anyone else's attempts. I actually hate using "said" or "says" in a story and find it annoying in things I read even though I know...
