Re: Wulf Moon's SUPER SECRETS Workshop & Challenge!

Over the last week, I've said "Character is action" in multiple critiques. This is a quote from Dan Wells, and his seminar on Creating Character Arcs at SSWS, about the importance of having active characters. I asked Wulf for permission to post a write-up on the concept, so here I go. Cha...

Re: Discussion: Q2 Volume 37

Has anyone, perchance, read Dave's newest newsletter and also felt that curious sickening that washed over me when I read about "Deadly Writing Sins"? Immediately, I squirmed. Did I confuse Dave? Bore him? Telling myself to work on edits . . . yeah . . . stop checking email. . . .Eat more ...

Re: Wulf Moon's SUPER SECRETS Workshop & Challenge!

Here's hoping! Still haven't received my receipt, so my nails look uneven again. LOL. Hoping that's because of the holiday weekend. I haven't been able to attend a writers conference in a few years, so this is exciting. wotf010 I think that the receipt is automatic. I got mine within minutes of enr...

Re: Wulf Moon's SUPER SECRETS Workshop & Challenge!

Your story inspired me to finish my story in the last five days before the deadline (I had scrapped my other story, which I'm picking back up this quarter), I thought if Wulf can do a story in one day, certainly I can finish mine in 5!! wotf009 I also wrote another complete story this quarter. But ...

Re: Wulf Moon's SUPER SECRETS Workshop & Challenge!

Star Reacher, just a thought. Disclaimer: i don't hold a Ph.D. in Ping-Pong Dialogue , but, what if you save the two questions you pose at the beginning of your dialogue, and substitute them at the end? This way your BIG REVEAL is last and carries more punch. Best, Retro wotf008 Thanks for the idea...

250 Word Dialogue Rewrite Assignment One lingering question I have is my use of questions. I debated changing the prose in the opening sentences to avoid questions, but I like to avoid using a lot of "he felt", "he wondered", etc. types of statements because it seems to yank a re...

Re: Wulf Moon's SUPER SECRETS Workshop & Challenge!

Thanks for the comments Moon. I've been following all the other examples and realized that mine was a bit different, but had posted before looking at anyone else's attempts. I actually hate using "said" or "says" in a story and find it annoying in things I read even though I know...

Re: Wulf Moon's SUPER SECRET Workshop & Challenge!

Lately, my brain has just NOT been focusing even when I try. I used to hit flow state regularly and get out thousands of words in what felt like hardly any time, and now I will try and try and even just getting out 100 words feels like the biggest effort, even if I have time to work on it. I think ...

Flow State Assignment: 1) What is flow state? Flow state happens when you are extremely productive, and the writing process is effortless. Re: Wulf Moon's SUPER SECRET Workshop & Challenge!

Just listened to the interview with Leah. What an awesome story about how you won the story! I think it is great, Leah, that you got accepted your 2nd time out of the gate. Something that resonated with me is that after your first submission, you worked hard to prepare for that next one. You studied...

Re: Wulf Moon's SUPER SECRET Workshop & Challenge!

KYD Benefits: For me, KYD is kind of like analyzing your story like a piece of popcorn. All those fluffy white bits, maybe dripping with melted butter, and topped with salt, might make your story appear beautiful. But the most amazing poetic language won't hold up on its own if it doesn't have a sol...

Re: Wulf Moon's SUPER SECRET Workshop & Challenge!

I think I somehow missed this earlier. With that said, I thought about the quote below but substituted slightly, thinking about it as if it read: "If you're getting HMs and SHMs and haven't gotten higher certificates yet . . ." I know that applies to several of us. I think every "next...

Although I am still "working" through the workshop by completing a story, I have seen all the videos and read all the essays. Because I have over 15 pages of notes, I thought I would drop a few tidbits here and there that stuck out to me. So for today: What a Story Is: A Guide by Algis Bud...

Magic Swords: I've been analyzing the stories in vol. 36 for different items in Challenge Secrets so that I can learn from them and strengthen my own writing. A few days ago I posed a question about whether the book/poem could be a magic sword in "Molting Season." Tim Boiteau responded and...

Re: Wulf Moon's SUPER SECRET Workshop & Challenge!

This makes so much sense to me! When I took my first writing course many years ago, I avoided writing dialogue because it felt clunky when I tried. So I made that the one thing to work on until another instructor admired my efforts. What we are afraid of is precisely what we probably need to stare d...

Speaking of "Molting Season", did anyone else think that the book of poems, etc. in the story is a type of "magic sword"?
