Re: Discussion: Q1 Volume 38

I submitted! I don't have any expectations for this one, but it feels good to have gotten another idea on the page and met the deadline. Onward! Submitted for the first time ever. Feels good. At this point I'm not even particularly concerned about placing, I just feel happy I had the balls to send i...

Re: Discussion: Q1 Volume 38

Will submit it either tomorrow or the 31st after one more round of edits, which will be the closest to the wire I have come. Does anyone else do this? wotf024 It looks like I'm going to be submitting right before the deadline for my third quarter in a row, so you're definitely not alone! I think I'...

Re: Discussion: Q4 Volume 37

(I am pleased to report I was one of the Finalists this quarter, which is a personal best for me. I did not win or place, but I'll happily take it. Congrats to the winners whomever you are! But if you will permit me a moment of vanity, I've been waiting a long time to bust out a certain smilie and ...

Re: Discussion: Q4 Volume 37

I've been away from the forums for a couple weeks now--real life came knocking on my door--so I never heard that results came in, and the email with my results got sorted into the junk folder, because of course it did. I just noticed a few minutes ago, and... wotf056 I am in shock. For real, I pushe...

Re: Discussion: Q1 Volume 38

My favourite method, when I can do it, is to complete my first draft in the first month, work on something completely different during the second month, and then do final edits in the month ahead of the deadline, as that helps me come at the edits with more objectivity. That's a fantastic idea--I'm...

Got my first R! Like several others here, I was expecting it--I take it as a good sign that we've all been growing in our writing abilities. :)

Congratulations to everyone who placed in the contest!

Re: Goals four V.38!

Thanks for making this thread, Dustin. I think you've got the right idea to set goals that we can control, and this amazing community is a great place to get the support to do it! I plan to: - Submit a fresh story every quarter - Write at least five hours a week - Submit to other markets at least fo...

Re: Discussion: Q4 Volume 37

I didn't have time to reread through mine either! Finished piecing it together at 11:50, and had it subbed six mins later. I thought I was probably the last submission, but no! Way to go Elessar and Pen Mark on getting it in. Setting a goal of not submitting this late is definitely a something I wo...

Re: Discussion: Q4 Volume 37

I got in just under the wire! Shoutout to RSchibler for providing a last-minute critique and giving me some good stuff to think about during my final revisions. I'd like to think I could squeeze an HM out of this story, but I look forward to the R anyway. Regardless, I'm proud to have finished it at...

Re: Discussion: Q4 Volume 37

I just wrapped up the first draft for my Q4--woo! Now on to revisions, which I'm honestly kind of looking forward to. It was freeing to not have to get every sentence perfect on my first try, but now I get to make the story shine, and I think there's some nice sparkly bits in there hidden under a th...

Re: Discussion: Q4 Volume 37

My Q4 is still kicking around inside my head--I've got an idea I like, but I'm trying to learn and practice a few more things before writing it in full. The WotF course has been really good so far, though, and as grueling as my first KYD exercise was, the final result is probably some of my best wri...

Re: Dialogue Tips

I don't think clicking the link in itself is harmful. On the page is a keylogging software download (supposedly to monitor children's usage), which I should have mentioned I would have SEVERE privacy concerns about installing. Okay, that makes sense. So - no one is going to help that 13 yr old girl...

Are you sure the link isn't harmful? It literally ends with "keylogger.html" and I know that certain kinds of malware are specifically meant to log your keystrokes. I'd treat it very carefully.

Hi, Kelley! That's awesome that you got an HM for your first submission. Now that I've submitted my first story, waiting three to four months for the result feels like a long time, haha. Good luck with your Q2 results! Also, I looked up your interview with Leah Ning and it was very interesting - I d...

All I wanted was to learn a couple of writing techniques, but all of you won me over with how supportive and lovely and encouraging this community is, so...
