Re: Ways to craft an effective introduction?

Adam Colston (V. 26) used to write and post opening after opening on the old Hatrack forum. We could only post 13 lines there, but he would get an idea, post it, and get feedback. We have the 450 thread here. Crank out some openings and get some feedback. Even if you don't finish the story. I've do...

Re: Ways to craft an effective introduction?

By introduction I'm guessing you mean exposition. Most stories, you don't want an introduction, because that way you have to hook the reader twice. And that's basically how to do it, as I'm sure everyone else will agree. Start off with a hook, make the reader curious to read on, and then pepper in ...

Re: Ways to craft an effective introduction?

I'd have to read your work to give personalized suggestions, but I can go over the basics: Generally speaking, the important steps are to establish the viewpoint character (preferably by having them take an action that illustrates something about their character), give a sense of the setting/genre,...

Ways to craft an effective introduction?

After reviewing critiques from across several projects, I have come to find a trend. My introductions need improvement. I usually hear my work is great...after they got past the introduction.

So, what are some of the ways to improve an introduction?

Hey, Ania, I would be happy to read your story. The others have far more experience with the competition, but I will do what I can.

Re: In need of a critique

Thanks for all the responses! I really appreciate the critiques. I sent you all PM's. Since my brain is shutting down, I'll follow up tomorrow and send my story.

In need of a critique

Hi,

I could use some fresh eyes and critiques on my WOTF story. I got a rejection and I would like to figure out how to improve it. If I can rework my story into something better, I will submit it to a future quarter. I need to figure out where I am going wrong in my writing.

Thanks,
Apollo.

Re: Discussion: Q2 Volume 37

Well, I just got an email saying my submission didn't place. Does that mean it got a hard rejection or do we hear about honorable mentions later? Either way, it is a bit disappointing, I thought it was a good submission. I wonder where I went wrong. That’s an R. R for me too. Good luck everyone. Oo...

Re: What have you done when the words no longer flowed onto the page?

No worries. I appreciate the conversation. Something I tell people when the topic of exercise comes up, I tell them it's 90% mental. I wait for the queer look, then I elaborate: 90% of exercise is deciding to exercise. Where your mind goes your body will follow. That's usually when they bid me a go...

Re: What have you done when the words no longer flowed onto the page?

Meditation terrifies me. I do P90X, but not in disk order. I run but not as many miles as I used to. I once entered homeostasis while running. Once. Was one of the most beautiful moments of my life. Lasted like 5 minutes. Came close another time, but not quite. Was more like a flow state. Had a bac...

Re: What have you done when the words no longer flowed onto the page?

Interestingly, I recently quantified one of the major aspects of my job as this: Refocusing after interruptions. I need intense focus for short periods of time, like 2-3 minutes, and every once in a while I'll hit a flow state of like ten minutes max. So I can say I still do get them from time to t...

Re: Discussion: Q2 Volume 37

I haven’t reread my story since submitting it, but I’m pretty sure I used ale and beer interchangeably... oh well, there are other things in it to help establish the atmosphere, so like Dustin said, if I get rejected, I’m sure that wouldn’t be the only reason. I have seen mistakes in a couple publi...

Re: What have you done when the words no longer flowed onto the page?

I would say I'm still in this mode. I haven't hit a flow state in years. My current process is to write by hand first, then transcribe. I didn't think it was possible for me to write slower, but I found a way. wotf005 Years? I came in looking for advice, but yours is way worse. I now want to help y...

Re: What have you done when the words no longer flowed onto the page?

If it's happening on one project, usually that means I made a mistake in my draft and need to go back and figure out what it is so I can fix it. Sometimes a bit of research on something related to the story can help. If it's happening no matter what I write, that means I'm either overstressed or my...

Re: What have you done when the words no longer flowed onto the page?

Usually I just move onto another project, or do something else entirely. This doesn't happen very often for me, but when it does, it means I'm overworked, and I need to let my brain rest. A lot of times I'll read a book to pass the time until I feel like writing again. This is the first time it has...

Re: Discussion: Q2 Volume 37

I’ve been emailing Joni due to some issues with the email I submitted under, and she let me know this morning that it will more likely be sometime mid-late next week. So maybe next Thursday! On one side this is fantastic news, there is still a chance to win. On the other side, we are still stuck in...

What have you done when the words no longer flowed onto the page?

I don't know if it is writers block, but two weeks ago the words just stopped flowing. When I am in the zone it flows like water. Now, no matter what I try to write, it doesn't come to me. The words are forced and hollow, without voice. Has this ever happened to you? What have you done to overcome t...

Re: Discussion: Q2 Volume 37

Thanks! I was able to submit to Q3 as well, but I am far less confident in that story than my Q2 submission. I'm dying to hear the results. The waiting wouldn't be so bad if I wasn't struggling on my current work-in-progress. After a great run writing everyday, the words just stopped flowing. I fee...

Re: Discussion: Q2 Volume 37

Finalists get a call. Others get emails. Sometimes the results all kind of come out at once, other times in waves. The official, public announcement goes up much later than the actual notification of results to the entrants. Thanks. I guess I will have to keep my phone off of silent for now. Not a ...

Re: NEW USERS! INTRODUCE YOURSELVES!

Hey, everyone. I'm dying to see the results of Q2, so I decided to join the forum to distract myself. I thought I had a good first submission. There was one element I was unsure if others would find effective, at the time I thought it worked well.
