Re: Can't read can't write

It is a super-long sentence. ... Question: Is the rest of the book like that?? Well, yeah. It's a really long sentence. Could you quit reading it once you started? I don't think more periods would change that. That's the point. I have never found a short story by this author. His books tend to be l...

Re: Can't read can't write

To anyone reading this. Why not toss in a great first line. Either a published one by someone else or one you make up. The wolves are hungry. (That was a statement, not an attempt at a line. But boy, I think it could be.) Here's my favorite opening sentence of a novel: It was a dark and stormy nigh...

Agathon, I am now following you on Amazon (does that make me a stalker?). Re: Discussion: Q1 Volume 38

From what I've read, if they read it through completely, it's typically at least a HM. So, if you didn't get a placing, it may not be the end that's the issue, because they probably never got that far. Mr H, I appreciate that you're trying to help me. The story in question was an HM in Q2. I rewrot...

Re: Discussion: Q1 Volume 38

wotf007 I hope things go better for you in the year to come! I appreciate the kind words. My goal is to improve as a writer. My gut says that reworking old stories is the slower path to mastery. This is one market where there's no slush pile. Once a story is submitted it will be read and ranked. Pl...

Re: Discussion: Q1 Volume 38

This year has been the best and the worst. It started looking routine, then came the lockdown. I "Worked From Home" with no responsibilities every other week for six weeks. I wrote three stories and for the first time started submitting to various markets. My very first submission, which w...

Re: Discussion: Q4 Volume 37

We are all to be congratulated! Good work everyone! My result in Q4 is HM This is a story I am quite proud of, One of only two comedies I ever tried. Rschibler critiqued another story I was considering for Q4 and her comments made it clear that the other story wasn't ready yet. So thanks, Rschibler!

I will give you some kind advice. If we get caught in a loop trying to perfect our past works, we never move on to our future. Keep writing fresh. Your skills will grow through the process. Moon Sage advice! This applies to every creative endeavor I've pursued in the last six+ decades. wotf008

Re: Goals four V.38!

I've always tried to focus on making my writing goals things that I can control (writing and submitting), rather than the things that I can't (acceptances, winning, etc.), but I like the idea of thinking about what I can do that could potentially affect the outcome in a positive way. Now that's an ...

Shoutout to RSchibler for providing a last-minute critique and giving me some good stuff to think about during my final revisions. Re: Discussion: Q4 Volume 37

I sent that story to every pro market that appeared over the years, and finally tickled an editor's funny bone enough that she bought it for her STRANGE BEASTIES anthology. It's going to be reprinted in another upcoming anthology as well. Just goes to show you, you have to find that one editor that...

you write something to tickle the funny bone and hope it hits the right spot. Doesn't matter if someone else laughs their head off. It must make Dave chuckle, and it must also convince him it would make the majority of anthology readers chuckle. Thank you, Wulf Moon! An enlightening answer. I'll pu...

Re: Discussion: Q4 Volume 37

Thanks for the feedback, I really appreciate it. It sounds like a straight comedy is rare amongst the published works. It depends what you call comedy, whether it has a plot--good--or it's a "jape"--Dave has said Not Good, because the reader has invested in the story only to find no denoue...

Re: Discussion: Q4 Volume 37

It occurs to me that I don't remember seeing a comedy or absurdist story in the back copies of the Anthology that I've read. I checked them out from the library and don't currently have one to look at. I've written two comedies, one is a fantasy and the other is a space opera. My critique partners a...
