Re: The Word That

‘Had’ was my biggest offender. One short I wrote had had :smirk: something like 1% ‘had’s. Had is fine to use in an introductory sentence to anchor a flashback in its place and then rarely anywhere else. In early drafts I personally don’t mind the ‘that’s and ‘had’s and ‘was’s or even the dreaded ‘l...

Re: Discussion: Q1 Volume 38

After some light edits and touch ups (thank you, reviewers) I eleventh-hour submitted last quarter’s SHM. I don’t feel like I got it to publishable quality, but perhaps elevated it enough to get personalized feedback?

Either way, better than nothing, I hope.

Re: Mirror mirror

That's the thing with structure, it needn't be intentional. While I'm a big fan of studying story structure and have spreadsheets arraying a half dozen different popular ones across each other, I'd say the vast majority of story creators aren't working from such a rigid base. They are descriptive, n...

Re: Mirror mirror

There's a couple different things that can come into play here. The concept of story circles, where the end comes back round to where the story began, is as old as Aristotle, and you see it in more modern structure concepts like Campbell's Hero's Journey (Vogler's adaptation Writer's Journey ) to Da...

Re: Can't read can't write

I wonder if the strict connotations of the word can't may be the sticking point here. Of course non-readers can write, and even possibly write well. But reading is an important aide that is generally preferred. One could make the claim that you can't survive a thirty thousand foot drop without a par...

4.6k SF for critique exchange

A bit last-minute, but I’m struggling to see what needs to happen to get this story over the top. I feel like it is close, but not there yet. I can share a google doc version or a .docx, whichever is preferred, and enjoy offering my thoughts on the works of others if anyone is still needing fresh ey...

Appreciate it all. I’ll see what I can do and take what advice I can get when the time comes. Thanks again.

Re: Discussion: Q4 Volume 37

The more I chew on this the more I get myself worked up. I figured this first entry to be a quick and easy R, I've never submitted anything anywhere before. Getting a Silver out of it makes me wonder if I would be better served to polish it up and try again for maybe Q2 or 3 of v38. I don't relish t...

Re: Do you have tips for brainstorming?

One thing that I find can jumpstart ideas is constraints. Your villain is trying to achieve a goal. Before the protagonist even registers on their radar, what obstacles does your villain have to face? Mentally sketch out a few try/fail cycles for them. Maybe even start with an obvious one and say yo...

Re: Discussion: Q4 Volume 37

And my first submission is in! At this point I don’t even mind the results. The dopamine from hitting submit will carry me through this one. Expectations can go up next volume.

Re: Discussion: Q4 Volume 37

I’m surprised how nervous I am, even though the stakes are so low. Is there any sort of feedback in the form rejections letting you know if you messed something up with the submission process itself? I’ve never submitted anything anywhere, just found shunn’s formatting guide and will be doing what I...

Re: NEW USERS! INTRODUCE YOURSELVES!

Figured I should drop an introduction here. My name is Shane Raben, known online as RabenWrites. I’ve studied the craft of writing for some time not don’t have a huge amount of hands-on experience. Last year I finally started getting serious, taking a college writing class and starting a twitch chan...
