Re: New anti-Spam Q&A is up and running
Okay, those spammers have been nuked. I re-checked the new user verification system. Hmmmm . . . maybe I need to make the questions more challenging? If we keep getting hammered this week, I will switch it up.

We'll see how well that keeps the robo-spammers away.
Ping me if you spot any of them slipping through. Thanks.

New account verification fixed
OK, new account verification (via automated e-mail) seems to be working again.
I just ran a dummy login through its paces, and things are working.
If anyone has any friends who are trying to log on, and can't, let me know, please?
Thanks.

Re: Forum upgrade, from 3.0 to 3.1 to 3.2
Sorry for the up-and-down nature of the forum today, gang.
We're at 3.1 now, but experiencing a few problems moving to 3.2
The forum may wind up looking and feeling a little generic, until I can get this figured out.

Forum upgrade, from 3.0 to 3.1 to 3.2
FYI for the group: I am in the process of getting the PHPBB software (for the forum) upgraded from 3.0 to 3.1, and then again to 3.2
Pardon the bumps.

I am going to try to expedite a solution. Facing similar technical obstacles as Martin and Kary. Hope to have it all remedied before September is through. Looks like the phpbb software could also use a full update as well.

Yes, I still have to go in through the front door, like everybody else. Do I automatically get funneled to the VIP line once I am in? I am not sure. I know stories have gotten "derailed" into the regular slush on occasion. I also know I wait just about as long as the rest of you to hear ba...

Re: How much do short stories help to build a career?
Which of course doesn't change the fact that breaking into a magazine like Analog is probably much more difficult than getting an editor at Baen or TOR or DAW to take a chance on your first novel. Really? Do you have data on that? I think the statistics are something Mike has quoted to me before. I...

Re: How much do short stories help to build a career?
Mediocre short stories are no use in selling books. Good stories, especially award-nominated or award-winning stories, make selling books to major markets -much- easier. Case in point: when I first met Toni Weisskopf (Baen chief editor and publisher) in 2011, she'd already gotten good word of mouth...

Re: How much do short stories help to build a career?
I basically would not have a career without my short fiction. It's been my short fiction that's gotten me all of my best PR to date, and most of my loyal readers too. It's what's attracted the attention of the Hugo and Nebula voters, and won me two Analog magazine AnLab readers' choice awards. It's ...

Re: Mike Resnick, Barry Malzberg, and the SFWA
I've resisted commenting on this, mainly because of the dead horse aspect. Suffice to say I let my SFWA membership lapse this year. My advice to any WOTF entrants or winners: join, for the "achievement unlocked" coolness. And then, if after a couple of years, you discover SFWA is of no tan...

I won't say I am thrilled with the tremendous slowdown in response time, since Trevor took the wheel. It would seem for the time being that extraordinarily long waits are the rule, not the exception; even for vets like me. All I can say is: roll with it. Getting overly antsy and/or upset about it wo...

Superstars 2014: you really need to be there

But since I have Joni's blessing for this, I am going to share. http://bradrtorgersen.wordpress.com/2014/01/04/boost-your-writing-business-acumen-with-superstars-writing-seminars/ Seriously. Re: SFWA Qualification Rates
Magazines are a tough niche sector of the overall market, unlike 70 years ago. It's a book world, and has been since probably the 70s. I keep wondering if the explosion of e-publishing will "train" readers back into enjoying and buying short fiction like they used to before paperbacks took...

Re: Analog Submissions
Patience is perhaps the one indisputable virtue of the professional writer. wotf011 Having said that, I agree with Annie: TOR.COM is mostly a promotional vehicle for existing TOR authors or authors TOR is courting. Yes, it's "open" in the sense that anyone can submit, but the likelihood of...
