Re: Reading vs writing

MattDovey wrote:You can't write without reading, though. I saw someone else recently describe it as reading is breathing in, writing is breathing out. You can't disconnect them. (Well, you can read and not write, but you know what I mean.)

I love this analogy. WIll use this in my teaching classes.

Re: Discussion: Q3 Volume 35

I wonder when they send out the certificates. Excited to get mine. I know it's just HM. But, I've never joined any writing contest before, and this is only my second entry here. It's not a win, but it's a great motivator for me to finish my stories. I've never once finished a story longer than 5k wo...

Re: Where can I find help for checking the science of the world I'm building?

Currently I’m unaware of anything that meets the criteria you’re searching for. However, using what science has on our own solar system should work well enough. There’s a lot of information on our planets. I would use the general rules of logic to develop your world. This topic does fall under the ...

Where can I find help for checking the science of the world I'm building?

Is there a game or an app where I can build a solar system and find out how it would act using real-world physics? eg. I would like to create a planet with 3 moons. I'd like to see how a planet with 3 moons would act with real-world physics. How would the 3 moons orbit the planet, what sizes would t...

Reviving this wondering what the state of things is right now. I have accounts on both platforms. I had one on Duotrope when it was free, and recently just made one on Grinder.

Re: Discussion: Q3 Volume 35

HM. What a bummer. Was hoping I'd get a little bit higher. SHM was my bet. Should have finished the story instead of leaving it in a cliffhanger. I wanted to test the water and see if any judge would deem my story worthy before it was even finished. I hate an HM result wotf23 Only a critique would m...

Re: Discussion: Q3 Volume 35

Potentially silly question here: does anyone know what number Joni calls finalists/winners on? The closer the end of the month gets the more paranoid I get that if (and that's a big, hopeful if) I get a call I'll miss it! why, are they going to cancel your entry if you fail to answer the call? wotf...

Re: Discussion: Q3 Volume 35

I love his blog post "Poetics." The strength of a writer's voice is usually how I also decide whether I want to continue reading something or not. Having read an inordinate amount of books, I've gained this inexplicable feel for voice. I don't read past page one if the hook isn't strong en...

Cliche, but true anyway. Books are the best writing teachers. When you reach that thousandth-mark, you'll begin to see a transformation in your writing. Read the classics! They've had the greatest influence on my writing.

Re: Story Titling

I never worry about titles until after I'm finished. It's just like writing poetry. I leave titling for last. I love making titles part of the story. Either as a tease or as a part of the cathartic process of reading. I want readers to get that additional gut punch when they realize why the title wa...

Re: John Goodwin Interview: Great info on the contest from the guy that knows!

Is there a transcript of this interview? I hate listening to podcasts and audio files. Not only because it takes too much time, but also because I need subtitles if I ever want to understand everything. I'm hard of hearing, so audio conversations aren't really good for me. I'm a speed reader, so a 2...

Re: Discussion: Q4 Volume 35

About length and endings: I don't believe it matters. Good writing is good writing, whether it be long or short; with happy endings, sad endings, or open-ended endings. Just write the best story you can, and if it's good, it'll get through. I don't believe in trying to mold your story to some percei...
