The Submission Grinder Newsletter

(copied from blog post for expediency sake, but I think this is of genuine interest to all you lovely writer people) Since the start of 2016 I have been working hard on completing some major upgrades to the Submission Grinder site. For those of you who may not be familiar with it, the Submission Gri...

Re: Quarter 1, Writers and Illustrators of the Future vol. 3

HM.

I'd submitted this story to KD, submitted again when Farland first took over, heavily revised it recently for unrelated reasons and had nothing better to submit at the time so submitted it again just in the off chance.

Re: Quarter 1, Writers and Illustrators of the Future vol. 3

This seems to be new? Dear 1st Quarter Entrant, We are on the fast track to have this quarter judged as soon as possible. Your story has made the first pass, which is good. It does not guarantee an Honorable Mention or higher but it has been seen. We will have our judging done pretty soon. I wanted ...

Also, Duotrope fully supports poetry and nonfiction readings--which the Grinder doesn't yet.

Re: The Grinder vs. Duotrope

Hi everyone, This is David Steffen, co-founder and administrator of the Grinder. Don't let my presence put a damper on the conversation by any means. But wanted to chime in a few things. 1. The Grinder is more SF heavy than Duotrope. But this isn't because the Grinder focuses more on SF, it's becaus...

Re: Quarter 4, Writers and Illustrators of the Future vol. 3

I forgot I hadn't posted in this thread yet--got a form rejection on October 15. I guess they're trying to send out rejections as the stories are read this quarter instead of waiting til the end.

Re: Quarter 3, Writers and Illustrators of the Future vol. 3

wotf057 This was my 24th entry to the contest (haven't missed a quarter since I started) and is the only time my story has reached this high. This is the same story that got shortlisted by Neil Clarke (but ultimately rejected) for Neil Clarke's Upgraded anthology. I'm hoping it will sell somewhere b...

Re: Quarter 1, Writers and Illustrators of the Future vol. 3

After getting the notice that I was in that 2nd look pool, I get a form rejection. Which is pretty much what I expected to happen. Predictive communications from WotF have always been unreliable for me. On the bright side, because of an odd mixup that left this particular story in an awkward situati...

Re: Quarter 1, Writers and Illustrators of the Future vol. 3

I got an email back in March saying my story is on "hold"....not quite sure what that means. But well over a month now and nothing further. I guess I'm still on "hold"? wotf017 Same here. I asked Joni about it this week, she'd hoped at that time that Dave would get through all t...

Form rejection.

Not at all surprised. I was definitely phoning it in this quarter--Ian was born right in the middle of it. More hopeful about the next quarter.

Re: Quarter 2, vol. 30

form rejection received on Friday. On the bright (kind of) side, I discovered after a conversation with Joni that I am not actually ineligible for the contest after all. So this is not actually my last entry ever as I had thought. And I found that out soon enough to avoid missing a quarter by droppi...

Re: Quarter 4, vol. 29

I got my formal straight-up rejection in the mail today for my snailmail submission. I'd already known it was implied because of the Finalist listing not having my name on it, but hadn't known if it was HM or what. It was that form rejection that says (paraphrased) "You've been rejected. But we...

Re: Quarter 3, vol. 29

I queried Joni, and she found a small pile of paper submissions she hadn't tied off yet.

HM for me, my first from Farland, for a story that KD has also HM'ed.

Mostly I'm just glad it had been read--I was starting to wonder.

Re: Quarter 2, vol. 29

I never got the normal rejection letter or HM letter. I'd wondered if my story had made it through at all, because of a formatting error I'd made that Joni had said she'd work around.

But I queried Joni and she officially told me the story had been read, so I guess that's a straightup rejection.

Re: Quarter 1, vol. 29

Got 2 more form rejections today in the mail, atop my email form rejection that I'd gotten a while back. So now I'm just confused. They both arrived in SASEs with my handwriting, so either one of them was meant to be Q2, or the SASE floated over from another quarter...

Re: Jibber Jabber - Q1 - 29

Thanks, David. So you were an early paper sub, hmmm? Ok, cool. So we know she's started in on paper, then. From his post in the other forum, it looked like an early e-sub. -F Nope, early paper sub. I tried one e-submission with WotF, and I got a confirmation but then found out that they didn't rece...

Re: Jibber Jabber - Q1 - 29

Here, it's my turn to stir the pot... See that 143-day rejection on Duotrope? It's all out of order with the rest of them, which have been more or less proceeding from early entries to late. I wouldn't be surprised if that was: A) an Honorable Mention, or B) an early paper sub C) an almost HM that ...

Re: Jibber Jabber - Q1 - 29

Well, crud. Form rejection arrived in my email today (for my e-submission). The form rejection doesn't insert author name or story title.

I'm a little extra bummed about this one because I thought this one a better fit than most of my submissions to WotF.

Just before dawn is false dawn, when the sky generally turns greyish. It's actually pretty light. Condolences to those who've gotten rejections thus far!

If last quarter is any judge, she'll read all the e-submissions before the mailed, so Luddites like myself probably have a while to wait yet.

Re: Jibber Jabber - Q1 - 29

I didn't mean ALL HMs and come out before higher categories. I was responding to what seemed to be Kary's thought that rejections come out before HMs. Based on my four prior quarters of experience, the e-mails coming out now are probably a mix of HMs and straight rejections, both of which show as r...

Would anyone like to comment on the usual time elapsed from the start of the flood until we get to the HMs, semis and finalists? It's extremely variable, and has changed from year to year.
