This sounds like it would be really informative, but I don't know where to start...

Re: Jibber Jabber - Q1 - 29

Hehe. I'd like to pretend I'm upset, but I really only was the first day I got the news. . .

Still if I don't place at least HM for the entire year, I'm going to be, uh... flabbergasted.

Re: Quarter 1, vol. 29

LAMPS (I guess) got a response in the mail today. Straight reject. That makes two in a row now. A dishonour unbefitting a former finalist! Is there an emote around here for flipping the bird? Ahh, no, but this will do better. (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻ I'm worried the new judge just doesn't like my VOICE or somet...

Re: Jibber Jabber - Q1 - 29

At this point I'm at the level of pure curiosity. . . I mean since it's so obvious I can't win (this quarter!) And I did at one point nudge Joni (gently!) to make sure my piece got in--and who can blame me, given I've had ranking pieces fall off the map--and it had. All of the SFs, whoever they are,...

Re: Jibber Jabber - Q1 - 29

While it would be awesome to sell the longer stories into paying markets, you're right, there aren't a lot that take them. On the other hand, my understanding is that the longer short stories are doing well at finding a niche in the self-pub e-market. I'd encourage you, if you run out of places the...

Re: Jibber Jabber - Q1 - 29

That rant, somehow, strikes me as somewhat mean-spirited. But then what can I complain about. ... meh I'm still around to see if I placed at ALL. At least I can't be singled out by name! There's really nowhere good to put stories over 10,000 words, is there? I mean, a few, but I find I get rejected ...

Re: Jibber Jabber - Q1 - 29

Wait, what, it's over? And my story WAS received... I don't know how I placed yet though, but... no phone call... you know what, I'm out. Not to be a poor sport but I want to write longer works now and I actually liked writing for K.D.... now, not so much. Not slightly. Bad taste in my mouth kind of...

Checking in to help maintain or further destroy sanity, depending on your perspective. No news! I've got complicated opinions about Dave which are left in the ether of not actually knowing him. But I do think that a man of his caliber wouldn't accept the responsibility of judging this contest unless...

Re: Jibber Jabber - Q1 - 29

I've been silent because I'm in Ontario, Canada, and tend not to be around much. I've been stalking the forum though! Re: Jibber Jabber - Q1 - 29

I'd say to expect results either tomorrow, or this weekend, because I'm going to be on a plane where I can't get phone calls... and then at an event where my phone probably won't have reception. And then, if by some offshoot I am a finalist, I'll get the final results back when I'm flying home. (Thi...

Re: Jibber Jabber - Q1 - 29

Since someone inquired earlier, I put in a paper sub. No news though. . . It's tempting to start e-subbing, since they appear to have worked out most of the kinks since the last time I tried to use it. Really refreshing to see some HMs go out though instead of just the swamp of R's. ^o^ Congrats you...

Re: Jibber Jabber - Q1 - 29

I... wow. My condolences to everyone, especially K.D.'s family and friends. I've never met her but she's been reading my stories for years and even liked one of them enough to pass it along to the finals. I've only heard her voice in forums and my semi-finalist letter... I guess because of that I fe...

Re: Jibber Jabber - Q1 - 29

Thanks for the advice. I'm guessing since I made it to finalist that the story not being taken is just a TASTE issue. . . also cramming like 60 pages in a mag from an unknown writer is generally a no-no. I'll probably hold onto it until I have a reputation and some other stories I know are good for ...

Re: Jibber Jabber - Q1 - 29

I did a paper sub and haven't received any confirmation whatsoever. Figure everything is fine, anyway. . . it hasn't ever not been! Unlike the e-subs. They probably fixed these but I still like going traditional. And my last finalist has been bumped from every market that takes Sci-fi novellas at th...

Re: Jibber Jabber - Q1 - 29

I don't know my exact stats. Because there were like, two entries I made as a teen (one of which was a QF) and then I backed off for like five years.... now I've lost track of the HMs because really who's counting after you hit finalist. o0 Even a SF would be a little embarrassing, if it contained s...

If I recall, lobsters don't actually scream. There's just a lot of water trapped in their shells and as it turns to steam it escapes. . . more of a teakettle thing than anything. Re: Jibber Jabber - Q1 - 29

This might be completely useless, but, I read in that nebulous 'somewhere' that in the most cases where people are reading quietly, 'said' ends up an 'invisible' tag most of the time. Because they're so used to seeing it, it's sort of literary white noise. Unobtrusive. But, yes, if there's a LOT of ...

Just some... observations/POV while I procrastinate I guess. o.o I resisted the 'said' thing a lot but these days I default to it. Comparing an old draft of mine, some dialogue followed by 'so and so exhaled.' And then I realized how absurd that was, after trying to exhale and speak at the same time...

Re: Jibber Jabber - Q1 - 29

Duotrope is a tricky thing... It is said that there are around 1000 submissions each quarter, which it makes it 4000 per year. Also, there are 12 winners per year. For the past 12 months Duotrope has seen 390 reports, which is about 10% of submissions. 7 of those were acceptances, which is over 50%...

Aaagh. Less analysis, more writing! Best to just forget about it and write until you get the phone call. (Trust me, I'm antsy as can be. Being a non-published finalist just makes you think that every single quarter is a victory waiting to explode.) And as someone who went from finalist to flat rejec...

Re: Q1 Volume 29

My Q2 v.28 finalist keeps getting bumped from venues without making much noise at all. I'm disappointed but not surprised. I think I've got one or two more places I can send it before it's just dead in the water. (It's novella/ette sized, and I'm being snobby about not submitting to non-SFWA pubs.) ...
