Re: Tim Power's "Power Reading List"

Except for a few stories, that's a good "History of SFF" but nothing that's currently being published. Certainly, if you're into the history of SFF, read those books (or just for enjoyment). But if you're working on being a professional writer in this day and age, read the stories that ha...

Re: If I get a fourth professional sale while I'm waiting for the results, do I get disqualified?

Any ideas onto how? I am reluctant to email the contest director and suggest that she's wrong... But perhaps I could say there was a common interpretation on the boards that it is the fourth published Sfwa sale that disqualifies you, and ask for a blog post to clarify the situation for everyone? I thought it'd be appropriate to post it here, but with the publication of my story "The Minotaur's Wife" in Galaxy's Edge today, I am officially pro'd out of the contest. Technically, I have two more chances to win, since I have a story in Q3 and Q4, but I cannot submit anymore new storie...

Re: What are the best ways for a finalist to start their car

WOTF is positioned as the contest that will launch your career, but after reading the real story behind Rothfuss's success here in this thread, I realize it's all just like everything else -- networking, networking, networking, relationships, relationships, relationships. Isn't it always the key in...

Re: What are the best ways for a finalist to start their car

On big addendum: I think the biggest benefit to the contest has been meeting the other aspirant writers. Writing is a lonely business, and meeting new friends to strive with you on the long slog is more valuable than anything else. I count many writers from this contest as good friends that I can't ...

Re: What are the best ways for a finalist to start their car

I'm due to pro out in a couple of quarters (whenever my story publishes at Galaxy's Edge). In my early years, I thought this contest would give me a "leg up" if I ever won. Now, I have a completely different view. In general, I think it's a good sale that comes with a lot of extra benefits...

Re: Submit, submit, submit

So those of you with 20+ submissions at a time, how long did it take to create that many stories, and how long does it take to create a new story? I've been submitting each quarter for 3 quarters now, and just hope to keep up that pace, so I don't anticipate getting up to that many any time soon. I...

Re: Mailing Lists - Good ones? Yours?

Anyone who has aspirations for a long term career should start a mailing list. Even if you don't have anything published yet. It's free on mailchimp until you have a certain number of followers. Then as you publish things, make sure your mailing list link is displayed somewhere. Here's mine: http://...

That is a crazy statistic Emily. Maybe one of the long time forumites will enlighten us. The fact that it was at 3am suggests that it's not real.
