Re: Success!

Nodehead, I'm not sure what Lightspeeds form rejections are, but they typically have three types. There's the "did not hold my attention" which means he probably didn't finish it. The "didn't quite work for me" meaning he may have finished it, or read a bulk of it, but it didn't ...

Re: Success!

Yeah, I know. Stubborn pride. I want to join when I can have it all. :-) With two successes back to back, I've sort of deluded myself into thinking this is the way it will always be. Naturally I'm headed for a rather shocking impact with the earth when I come back down to it, but I hope to be able t...

Re: Success!

My story "The Hanged Poet" is now up at Intergalactic Medicine Show. This is my first pro sale outside of winning Writers of the Future, so two down, one to go before joining SFWA. :-) This story was my non-winning finalist for Q4 2009, so I hope ya'll like it. You can read the first two p...

Re: NEW USERS! INTRODUCE YOURSELVES!

Welcome all, and good luck. If nothing else, forcing yourself to enter every quarter is great practice and great discipline.

Brad and Juliana, some day I'll get to Utah. I suppose standing on that little brass disk at the 4-corners doesn't really count?

Re: NEW USERS! INTRODUCE YOURSELVES!

Welcome Tori and Bard Constantine, enjoy the forum. Hopefully you'll get something good out of it, and make some friends. And Tori, I've been writing for about twenty years, and every time I look back a few years I can see how much better I've gotten. It never stops if you never stop. So don't give ...

Re: NEW USERS! INTRODUCE YOURSELVES!

Welcome everybody (since I'm way behind in my welcoming and I'd probably miss somebody if I tried listing all of you). Have fun, scan through the history of the forum for nuggets of wisdom. Ask questions. And if you're still pretty raw in the writing skills, get involved in one of the free on-line c...

Re: Sci-Fi and Fantasy Books You Enjoy?

I used to love door-stop epic fantasy. I can't read it any more. I don't seem to have the time or the patience, and a lot of epic fantasy is flawed enough that my harsh internal editor gets his dander up. Do we really need all of those sprawling subplots? With no time these days, I'm several years b...

Re: Success!

ehm, hrm, humpf. If I tried to take my whole wedding/honeymoon time writing, I suspect my wife would have soundly thumped me. Granted she's not a writer and mearely tolerates my hobby when it doesn't get in the way, but there were other things going on during that whole wedding/honeymoon thing. :-) ...

Re: Success!

From the engineering side of the equation, I think a lot of them work until 10pm because they like engineering and would rather be doing that than going home, and the rest work until 10pm because of simple peer pressure. I leave on time most days because I have to pick my son up from daycare, and I ...

Re: Science Fiction and Fantasy on TV.

I don't remember all the facts, but I don't believe Farscape meant to finish up when they did. They had a bunch more planned. Then they got told it was their last season suddenly, and they got cancelled. Due to huge fan outcry, they got the greenlight for a two hour movie, so the writers tried to cr...

Congrats, Ms. Nobu. :-)

How did you go about deciding which 5 editors to send to? I'm much more familiar with playing the agent game, so I'm not as up on how to find editors at variou s houses.

Thanks for any insights.

Congratulations Alastair, Congratulations Annie. Woo hoo! Good news all around.

(Btw, I'm jealous of anyone who can write Flash. That would have been a 10,000 word piece if I wrote it. Good story.).

I had GRRM as a seminar instructor back in 2004. He's a very nice guy. Very personable. He was frustrated at that time at the massive length that the last book had grown to. He wasn't even done yet, and the publisher was already saying they wouldn't publish it at that length (the first books were in...
