Re: This is how you format your PAPER Contest entry!

Ack! The link to the PDF appears to be dead. Is it working for anyone else?

Re: ILLUSTRATORS' Q & A

If the series didn't place as a semi-finalist (which disqualifies them for reentry), I sometimes submitted one of the stronger illustrations again in another batch. Wait wait wait! You can DO that? My brain just exploded a little. I have the same issue with having one or two strong pieces and then ...

Re: Loading an avatar picture

Pitty the child who has a strange and/or bizarre name inflicted upon him or her by bohemian parents! wotf001 It's less bizarre than the names he could have gotten if we'd stuck to family tradition. The options were Trifon, Vinal, Juan Nepomuceno (the Nepomuceno was required), and Cipriano. We might...

Re: Loading an avatar picture

Cwm is neat! And I love Taliesin. Sadly, my husband shot down Suffer-Not-Injustice as a middle name. His exact words were, "he is not a dog!" Speaking of mythology, I had a giant hand to forehead moment when I realized my dog's sire (he's a wolfhound) is named Arawn. The kennel name is Ann...

Name's Ash - housewares. P.S. named my son after this bad boy. Seriously, his name is Ashton. (had to disguise it a little so the wife wouldn't catch on.) wotf015 Oh my gosh that's awesome!!! I could never get away with that. The best I could do was Samuel, after His Grace, His Excellency, The Duke...

Re: Proing out of the illustration side?

Thanks guys! Martin's link sounds pretty straight forward, but I'll send Joni an e-mail just in case and report back with what she says.

Proing out of the illustration side?

Is the criteria for proing out for illustrators the same as writers? That is, if we sell a piece for publication, are we no longer qualified once it is in print? Or once it has been sold? The reason I ask is an author friend of mine just sold his 6 book series and asked the publisher about letting m...

Re: Resources for art critiques

Thanks for the book recommendation! I'll track down a copy when the paycheck comes in, or maybe put it on the Christmas list. wotf008 That's pretty encouraging. I feel like most of my black and white stuff just isn't... refined. Or something. Blah. Just want to get the results from Q3 back so I can ...

Re: Resources for art critiques

Awesome! And thanks for the info Scott. I think that's what went wrong with my entries the first time. They were too portrait-esque. Currently I struggle with color. I love working in it, but one eye sees things in a different tint than the other so I never know if it's "true" or not when ...

Re: Resources for art critiques

In the past, I have posted art at Baen's Bar--and it is password protected. The only thing is that not many people comment in that particular forum: Baen Bar Art. I did post one of my IOTF submissions there and although it only received one comment (from Edith) by seeing it posted, I realized I nee...

Resources for art critiques

Since the writers have their own writing critique section and a multitude of password protected critique sites, I thought the artists could use a thread that compiles resources for getting critiques and honing their craft. http://www.conceptart.org is a pretty amazing website across the board for le...

Re: Favorite Medium?

Thanks for the nice comment, I like the wolves too. And "woodcut" is something the judges at our workshop said too. I'm a "primitivist" apparently. :) Good for my own sort of thing, actually ... but probably definitely the market appreciates the digital and the modern-vibe (basi...

Pat, I really love that salamander piece! It's nice to see stuff close up. The dragonfly you did is exquisite as well. You've got a real knack for critters. That google site looks pretty nice and professional too. Are they free to set up and use? MJ, that is one pretty goldfish too. Oh man, the comp...

Re: Favorite Medium?

Soulmirror, something about your style really grabs me though. In the portfolio thread there was one in particular, the dude preaching to the wolves. That was excellent. It reminds me of the old style woodcuts. Digital I have mixed feelings about. So many digital pieces just look way too clean and s...

Favorite Medium?

This forum is sadly barren, so here's my question for all the artists lurking on here. What is your favorite medium to work in? Do you work in more than one, or have you found a favorite that you stay with most of the time? Personally I adore oil paint. I have a 4 year old daughter and another on th...

Re: NEW USERS! INTRODUCE YOURSELVES!

It's probably past time to post in this thread.

At the moment I've got a story in Q2 and art in Q3. I've got the most hope for the artwork, but will see how things go. It's been really educational reading everybody's posts on the forum. There are so many talented people here!

Re: ILLUSTRATORS' Q & A

Thank you so much for laying that out Stephen. It's extremely helpful. The CMYK vs. RGB is exactly why I didn't want to try printing hard copies. The other two are photographs of large pieces which were then tweaked and fixed a bit. When I tried converting to CMYK both images got a weird cloudy look...

Re: ILLUSTRATORS' Q & A

Oh phew. Joey that was brilliant. I went in and changed the file to 600 DPI and that puts it at 5.6 MB. It still looks okay. Honestly I'd rather the sacrifice a bit of quality on the one black and white entry than compromise the other two. Rescanning won't work because I made a graphite sketch, phot...

Re: ILLUSTRATORS' Q & A

Ack!! Okay, here's an urgent question. I went to e-submit my entries for this quarter. In the contest rules it states that e-subs must be larger than 5"X7". Okay, that's cool. Done. But when I went to actually upload them, this is what I see: Submission Criteria: ***Uploaded files will not...

Re: ILLUSTRATORS' Q & A

Agreed! There are so many places, both on and off this forum where writers can go to find all the specifications publishers want to see their work submitted with. As an artist, it's been really frustrating trying to find all that stuff out. For one thing, it seems like people have a hard time agreei...

Re: ILLUSTRATORS' Q & A

Art created in colour is shown to the contest judges at some stage in black & white, I believe. But can anyone here tell us if the judges ever see it in colour , and when? It's obviously a moot point for myself and others who have already done the contest ... but might be info others still ente...

Re: ILLUSTRATORS' Q & A

Thanks Joey! That is really helpful. The person at the counter at our fedex/kinkos was pretty clueless, and I had no idea what to ask for to get good prints so that was just a giant fail. I'll probably do a digital submission this time around. And hello from another local. I grew up in Olympia, we a...

Re: ILLUSTRATORS' Q & A

How many illustrators entered through the e-sub vs. printed and mailed? And for those that mailed, what is the best way to get a good print of your work? I do mostly traditional art, but like to photograph and keep digital copies as backups. Is the best way to get a print to photograph, tweak the ph...

My e-mails for help probably got eaten.

Here's the situation. I'm just trying to figure out what's going on and whether or not my story is currently submitted, or if it ever made it in or not. In December I set up my profile to submit a story, but it wasn't ready and I did not submit anything. I did not receive any confirmation e-mails. T...
