Re: Jibber Jabber - Q4 - Volume 34

Rejection this time, but I knew why before the email came in because of my wonderful critique group. Onwards!

Re: Jibber Jabber - Q4 - Volume 34

Just curious. What happens when WOTF just gets too big for Dave to handle the load? Will they get a second "gate keeper"? Does he actually have slush readers or does he really glance at every single story? I can imagine that working in the past, but with the competition gaining popularity...

Re: Jibber Jabber - Q1 - Volume 35

I actually know which story I'm submitting, but it needs a lot of work. And I've got a novel to finish before I can work on it. Hmm, maybe I should rearrange things, then submit the story early so I don't have to worry about it. Too many stories, not enough time.

Slips into a jedi robe, strokes his beard thoughtfully, and does his best Obiwan voice. "You must do what you feel is right, of course." ~Moon~ Hah!!! You say that after I've come up with a story idea, character profiles, and an outline. This story is getting written baby and someone is g...

Re: Jibber Jabber - Q4 - Volume 34

] Write fresh. Your best story is the one you're about to write, not the one you're about to revise. : ) ~Moon~ I half love this idea, Moon. I love writing something new (says the girl with 150+ shorts in her drawer). But it's a double edged sword. Half of what I write as a short story ends up as a...

Re: Cover Letters

From my time as a slush reader, the cover letters that "tried too hard" seemed to be indicators of people that would be difficult to work with. You don't want to give that impression of yourself because if it comes down to choosing between your story and another, then that element becomes ...

Re: Five Minute Rant

wotf020 I might have consoled myself with the fact that I had a story in the final round at Plasma Frequency. That one still shows in progress on Submittable. However the magazine has closed. It says so both on The Grinder and their home page. Will they get round to letting me know personally? I do...

I got one too. I keep trying, but they're at the further end of my submission order due to the wait time. Gives me a chance to look it over before I send it to TOR.com. Then it's down to semi pro markets.

Re: Slush

Nice post, Mike. Thanks for sharing. I wold like to add that having a glimpse of the slush pile also does wonders for your perspective as a writer, as in, what not to fuss over anymore, and how to get ahead of those other stories. If you haven't read slush, it's a great experience. Find a zine, pro ...
