Re: Quarter 4, Writers & Illustrators of the Future, Vol 34

Re: Cover Letters
From my time as a slush reader, the cover letters that "tried too hard" seemed to be indicators of people that would be difficult to work with. You don't want to give that impression of yourself because if it comes down to choosing between your story and another, then that element becomes ...

Tom, congrats and commiserations. 30 is a respectable number and an indication of consistency. I know I'll see you around the interwebs, but still going to wish you luck with your writing and publishing. :)

Re: Five Minute Rant
wotf020 I might have consoled myself with the fact that I had a story in the final round at Plasma Frequency. That one still shows in progress on Submittable. However the magazine has closed. It says so both on The Grinder and their home page. Will they get round to letting me know personally? I do...

I got one too. I keep trying, but they're at the further end of my submission order due to the wait time. Gives me a chance to look it over before I send it to TOR.com. Then it's down to semi pro markets.

Re: Slush
Nice post, Mike. Thanks for sharing. I wold like to add that having a glimpse of the slush pile also does wonders for your perspective as a writer, as in, what not to fuss over anymore, and how to get ahead of those other stories. If you haven't read slush, it's a great experience. Find a zine, pro ...

Re: Am I doing submissions backwards?
That said, I hate waiting. I almost always hit the super-fast pro markets first (Clarkesworld, Shimmer, Lightspeed, etc.), and then usually the super-fast respectable semi-pro and token markets (Interzone, etc.), and then return to the reasonable pro markets, before I move on to places like Analog ...

Re: Am I doing submissions backwards?
Rejections sting, there's no other way around it. On various writing communities I participate in rejection/submission contests. Rather than focusing on "damn it my story was rejected again, my writing is crap", it turns into "oh hey a rejection, I can add a point to my score" an...
