Re: NEW USERS! INTRODUCE YOURSELVES!

Wow, I never would have imagined seeing someone quote Galaxy Quest until now... wotf009 Hello. My name is Inigo Montoya. And by Grabthar's hammer, I swear I will quote Galaxy Quest wherever possible from now on. It's one of my favorite movies (and provides, as you can see, a nice counterpoint to on...

Re: Jibber Jabber - Q1 - 29

Brad pointed out in another thread that KD was unable to teach the writers' workshop for the first time this year. It may be that whatever hindered her there (hopefully something like daughter's-big-wedding rather than scary-medical-emergency) is also holding her up on results this quarter.

How about we move the "write write write" lectures to threads on writing strategy, or something. That is: I'm kind of tired of horsing around here and having people come in and tell me what I should be doing instead. It's a JIBBER JABBER thread on entries to this particular quarter of the ...

If you don't enjoy speculating on results, then don't. But don't assume others are driven by anguish and need to find something better to do. To each his own fun, be it Skyrim, a movie, or gabbing here about results.

To respond to the original question, Scott, I still see both images in your sig. I see only one and a broken link to the other. That's what I see now, too, on my Mac/Safari. But on my phone (Android), I see both images fine. Odd. ETA: if I try to open the missing image in a new tab, I get a screen ...

Well put. Portraying something isn't the same as glorifying it. I've always thought the film Trainspotting is an excellent deterrent to heroin addiction, for example.

Re: Jibber Jabber - Q1 - 29

I ran a kindle search in the latest issue of F&SF, and nearly every story contains the word "suddenly." Some twice. I hadn't noticed any of them while reading. At the end of the day, that's what matters: the writing doesn't pull the reader out of the story.

I think this: * Omit dialog tags whenever it's clear who's speaking. * "Said" will cover most situations when clarification of who's speaking is required. * Judicious use of some other tags can really enrich a text, but it's always worth seeing if you can convey the same flavor/feel anothe...

Agreed. I think the potential finalists and semis are put in a pile as they are discovered and then later they are then ranked. I have wondered if the silver HM's might be the potential semi's if the semi count gets too big. I think something to this effect has been stated before by KD.Yes, in this...

HMS have gone out in the first wave of results in past quarters, so it seems new that only Rs have been sent so far. Of course, nothing may have changed; the forum is a tiny, statistically non-representative sample of all entrants.

If this quarter were to follow last year's Q1 timing exactly, then KD will be announcing she's sent all results to Joni on March 22. Finalists will be getting calls in the two or three days after that. About three weeks later, they'll be allowed to crow in public. Which, as I've said before, means n...

Two stories a month out of c.700 makes it about a 1 in 350 chance - which is about the same as winning WOTF. I try to focus on this aspect of that bit of math: there are a whole lot of awesome stories that HAVE to be rejected. My story could well be one of them. Rejection doesn't mean a story's bad...

Re: Jibber Jabber - Q1 - 29

Last year, Q1 results took seven weeks from first rejections to finalist announcements (March 3 to April 21). Then those lucky folks in the latter category got to wait until JUNE before hearing whether they'd won. Of course, that means nothing for this quarter. But I'd like to think that it's a slig...
