Re: Q1 Volume 29

Wow, I turn my back, and this topic explodes! For all of you stressing about getting rejections and what the contest's tastes are, I've recently had a story that was straight-out rejected here accepted by a well-respected semi-pro publication. I regret that I'm not comfortable posting details until ...

Re: Q1 Volume 29

I tend to forget about Lightspeed. I never see them show up when I do a search. If you're setting a "subgenre" when you input the story, they may also be getting filtered out if that subgenre is not one that they explicitly list as something they're interested in. I often re-run a search ...

Hi, Ember!

Yes, that first story is an emotional rollercoaster. Don't let the downs keep you down. Keep writing, and keep submitting, and you'll do fine!

And welcome to the forum!

Well, I was going to wait until I could provide you with a link to Barnes & Noble as well, but they seem to operate under a definition of "24-72 hours" with which I was not previously familiar, and have not bothered to put it on sale yet. (Amazon has managed to process the original e-b...

And also remember that a good chunk of your writing -- the working out characters, plot points, thinking through the implications of new ideas, etc. -- can, in fact, be done while doing XYZ for your spouse or while playing cars with the kid. Welcome, Blair! Sounds like you're off to a good start with all the writing you've done already. FWIW, my rule of when it's "good enough" is the Syd Field rule: when you're making tiny changes ("yet" instead of "but") or picking nits, it's time to declare it done. Best ...

Nick Mamatas' advice for dealing with first-person narrators is to think about how a person would tell the story if they picked up the phone and called their best friend. It wouldn't be, "How're you doing? ... Well, I got up this morning and went out for coffee, and then I met Tim and Angie, an...

I'm hoping that my next entry will have the serendipity to compete with stories written mainly by remedial English 101 students and typewriter-owning monkeys. Oh, I'm sure you were competing with plenty of those anyways, though these days most of the monkeys own word processors with spellcheck... w...
