Re: 15 Questions with Dean Wesley Smith

Really good interview. It got me thinking about taking one of the workshops. Where is a good place to get information about the one in Oregon, or any other good ones anyone here knows of? Thanks! I wouldn't swear to this, but I think Dead Wesley Smith and Kristine Kathryn Rusch run one in Oregon...

I'm not sure I like the "Chutes and Ladders" comparison. There's no "Go back to start" space on the Chutes and Ladders board.

That's great! Congratulations!

I can make smileys! The set currently displayed comes with the system, but soon I hope to have some originals up. Suggestions: "I got a form rejection" smiley (probably thumping its fists); "I got an honorable mention smiley" (probably smiling while thumping its fists); "I'...

I've sold Party, with Echoes , the story I entered (and withdrew) from the third quarter to Redstone SF! Contratulations, and color me a little jealous. (I've been trying to crack Redstone since they first launched. For those who haven't submitted there, they really do try very hard to gi...

Re: 15 Questions with Kristine Kathryn Rusch

I read an interview with Cory Doctorow in which he said, "Writing is not research, and research is not writing. Just stick 'TK' in when you don't know the details, and keep writing. Do the research in one shot later." I've been doing that recently, and it works a charm. Turns out I really...

Re: 15 Questions with Kristine Kathryn Rusch

My recreational reading skills are shot. It's weird, I am having to teach myself to read fiction all over again. The critical thing has absolutely killed my reading. Yeah, I have to make a conscious effort to turn off the editor when I'm reading. My attitude is, read it for pleasure. Then, if I thi...

Re: NEW USERS! INTRODUCE YOURSELVES!

Thanks for the suggestion. I usually have 4-5 story ideas in various stages. Are their other contests you recommend? There's also the annual Jim Baen Memorial Writing Contest specifically for near-future, space-travel stories, which has an excellent reputation which is open right now. Many of the p...

Happy New Year 2011! Welcome, and Happy New Year. Best of luck in the contest. My resolution this year is to become PROFESSIONALLY published. May I suggest a brief modification? Fresh blood for the contest here. Brent C. Green to be more precise. I'm an eighteen year-old English (Creative Writing) major in Texas. I have self-published my first novel (I dived headfirst into writing with a novel, with no experience or even a short story before) through the company Createspac...

Re: NEW USERS! INTRODUCE YOURSELVES!

Kyle, welcome aboard. Never too late to enter the Contest. Just ask Carl Frederick. I suspect more people could enter the contest than realize. The rule is, 3 pro-pay (SFWA level) publications, so you could technically be professionally sold three times, and still enter. You only get DQ'd on that f...

Re: Pointers from Frederik Pohl

Thanks for the post, Brad. And since I'm fortunate enough these days to be moving in circles with several working, professional writers, let me assure everyone that lots and lots of rejection letters is the norm . Most writers I ask say they can't even count the rejections they got before their firs...

Re: NEW USERS! INTRODUCE YOURSELVES!

Kyle here. From Fresno, CA. Previously from Los Angeles, CA. Before that from Tabernacle, NJ. Before that from an even smaller town in CT. Can't remember much before that, but I'm told I also lived in ME, SC, and NH. Navy brat, in case you wondered what sort of parent would do that to a child. :) I ...
