Re: Jibber Jabber - Q1 - 29

The logical side of me asks, “Is the news either good or bad just because you haven’t read it?” I believe it is either good or bad the moment you hit the “SUBMIT” button. That is the point where you’re personal control over the outcome has ended. From there, otherworldly forces will determine if the...

It's like everyone is watching the sky and listening for the sound of approaching planes. Everyone wondering if they will come dropping bombs or supplies. Bob must be flashing back about now. wotf009

Anybody else get the e-mail from Author's Services about the upcoming awards thing for V28 and think, "oh, here's my polite rejection?" And then you see the title and go, "Whew (for now)." wotf018

Re: Analog Submissions

Before participating on this forum I used to imagine that WOTF would track submissions over time looking for consitency. I hadn't thought of that for publishers but it would be a smart strategy.

Re: Analog Submissions

I posted the rejection mostly so the new writers who find their way to this forum can see that everyone receives the same kinds of rejections. It's not personal, its business. I don't begrudge Analog for this kind of rejection and I will continue to submit the stories I feel are a best fit with them...

Analog Submissions

I'm going to be bold and try something new here. I'm going to talk about my submission to Analog in the same way I post things about my current submission to the quarters in the Contest forum topic. So I submitted a Flash Fiction story at Analog 26 days ago. There are others reporting that they subm...

Well, I finished my Q1 entry yesterday on Turkey-day. It's amazing what a couple extra hours will get you. I've started circulating it with my usual readers for their opinions. Now I have time in the holidays to work on other stories in the works.

Whew.

Re: Q1 Volume 29

I haven't finished my entry for this quarter yet. I will have time over Thanksgiving week. The story itself is set and just needs to be typed, but I haven't come up with the ending yet. Usually, the point of my story is in the ending but with this one, the whole topic of the story is the point of th...

Sure you could write all day, but a) you'd be lonely and miserable and b) have no one to brainstorm with you and c) have no one to read your stuff. :-) I agree so that's while I'll stay married and gainfully employed and my writing will have to rely on focused determination for increased productivi...

Re: Q1 Volume 29

Illustrators get one page from a 40 page story, etc. Speaking to the marketing side, I think cover art is more important than ever. Everyone knows what the Empire State Building looks like from the outside and I challenge anyone to tell me what the floor plan looks like inside. As a writer who know...

Re: Q1 Volume 29

The distinction I was trying to make was that the story itself isn't the marketing effort, that is to say writing stories that aim too much with marketing in mind will probably come across as formulaic. To me, marketing is a separate effort from storytelling which is splitting hairs on the original ...

I think all of being a good storyteller is telling a good story and then you need to be or know someone who is a good marketer to find an audience. I have thus far had very limited success in the latter.

Well, since this topic will be at the top of the list for the next six months, why not be on the first page? I have my story for this one in my head, but then who knows. I thought the finale of Falling Skies ended strong. I liked the pause given to the conquering aliens.

I've now moved on to watching Torchwood Miracle Day. I've never seen the past Torchwood shows and may have to go back to watch them sometime.

Did I miss a pilot movie or did Falling Skies just start in the middle of the story? I started watching Jerrico a few episodes after the bombs dropped and seeing Falling Skies from the "start" feels the same.

Re: Science Fiction and Fantasy on TV.

One of the better parts of Farscape was the use of Henson's puppeteers. The effects were not always seamless, but it was refreshing to see a universe populated with more true alien shapes rather than relying on nose and ear make-up for a universe populated with humanoids.
