Re: Five Minute Rant

I'm taking a rant time-out, because I have a thought on these Duotrope length issues. Ultimately, it's our responsibility to read the guidelines, because Duotrope might be wrong. We all know that. So in essence, all that length filter does is prevent us from seeing markets that might accept our sto...

Re: Five Minute Rant

Okay, here I go. I have a rant. I queried a market yesterday because my story was taking over the normal time limit for their submissions. I was expecting the "you'll hear back from us in a few days" because most of their stuff was coming out at later dates. Instead, I get a rejection lett...

Hello Sarah! Glad to have you back in the competition. Our motto around here seems to be "Never give up, never surrender!" So, you're in good company if you're looking for commiseration and encouragement. wotf007 Wow, I never would have imagined seeing someone quote Galaxy Quest until now...

Re: Jibber Jabber - Q1 - 29

I agree. Duotrope is good for knowing when an editor is hanging onto your piece (if you see 20 rejections come out and they submitted after you, you pretty much know they got to your work). They're also good for keeping track of your submissions. But, other than that, you can't read too much into it...

Re: Jibber Jabber - Q1 - 29

If you quantitize it based upon stats like that, it'd be useless for anyone to enter. After all, it's always a 98+% chance you won't get anything (HM on up). But, that means you're not looking at the qualitative data behind the stats. There are themes of stories which do better than others (KD does ...

Re: Five Minute Rant

Hmm... I'd like to do a rant about writers who seek instant gratification and can't figure out why they're not published after two months of trying... but that might be inappropriate (dealing with someone like this on another forum--ugh). Grrr, where is that 'somebody's wrong on the Internet' doodl...

Re: Five Minute Rant

Longest out for me is 252 at Tor.com.

Combined...well...1,177 days. 2 were recent subs, so they don't count towards the total, but that's a lot for 34 subs (really, 33, but I simsubed one).

Re: Five Minute Rant

Seriously, Kary? That's very cool. Both of my subs to Lightspeed said 'didn't quite work for me.' Still a form rejection, but... but... still! Actually, those are stage 2 for Lightspeed. Top tier forms say "didn't quite win me over." However, to cheer you up from that, check my story at A...

Oh, I am so in on this. How the hell is it I can get a semi-finalist, have K.D. tell me she loves my stories (THAT'S a rant for another day) and I still can't sell shite to a major publisher? I got a rejection from Analog in less than a week. It's like they're looking for my stories so they can kic...

Yes, just like how she wants the word "said" and the flat language. It could be what's been eating at my works for some time with her...and why I'm not getting any HM's.

Re: Penumbra Submissions

They do, but they also need to meet the quals for getting into SFWA. As of right now, they're not listed.

I may also be working with McCourt at AE to try and get it qualified. 6 cents per word and at the current exchange rate, it's definately a pro market.

Re: Penumbra Submissions

Is that the Politics issue? I can't tell because they have the acceptances so sparced out.

If I get in, I hope it becomes a qualifying market. It would be good to sell now to a SFWA market.

Welcome new members.

Btw, if you're wondering why I'm really late, it's because I'm in the middle of my last semester at UT while in the next round of resubmissions for most of my works. Ay ya!
