Re: NEW USERS! INTRODUCE YOURSELVES!

Welcome George and Carrol!! I'll second the critique board on here. If you have the motivation to improve and want to publish I think the most direct route is to join a forum like this post in the writing section and ask questions on how to improve in certain areas. Also there is not shame in "...

Oh and I forgot to mention Stewart provided lightening fast editing before I sent it off....which I'm convinced saved my bacon (tofu based, completely vegan friendly--in honor of the Donkey).

Re: Success!

Yay, Tina! Nice title. Preston Dennett (HM x 4) Thanks Preston. The history of the story is that it's a line from the first chapter of my novel. I took it to a workshop in March (the novel not the short story) and a number of people liked that scene. Dave Farland suggested I try to take that scene ...

Re: Success!

So I've kept this secret for a while until the TOC would come out, but now I think it's ok to announce after heavy hinting on Facebook. I sold a story to Galaxy's Edge, edited by Mike Resnick. It's titled "Today I Am Nobody" and will appear in the May issue. I'll try to remember to post a ...

Re: Five Minute Rant

I see a lot of submission calls for poetry to "not rhyme" what's up with that? Some of the best poems rhyme. I think even better to combine rhythm and rhyme to make it interesting. My husband and his dad do some amazing poems and they all mostly rhyme. Maybe I have a bias ear to rhyming? M...

Re: copyrights

Thanks again. What is a Beta? Alpha readers and Beta readers are just slang for the first or second people who read your work and then give comments, critiques, editing suggestions. Sort of like your running your story by them for a test on how well you hit all the points you wanted in your story (...

Re: NEW USERS! INTRODUCE YOURSELVES!

Thanks for reply. I will keep at it. I submitted a story of about 1000 words that as yet I haven't received reply. Does that qualify as flash fiction? yep, that would be flash. Flash is a hard sell in the contest, but not impossible. Dave Wolverton has been picking some short short stories along wi...

Hey Jim! Welcome to the board. Don't let the rejection get you down--any number of things can contribute to a rejection (including bad day for the judge, your story was too similar to a number of other entries in theme, characters, world, subject matter, a few errors in the opening paragraph...the l...

Re: Success!

Okay, I received and signed the contract a few minutes ago (just to play it safe, I suppose. I don't know how most people feel about when to announce), so here's the spiel: It's for my flash story "The Business is Dying" to Penumbra for their Zombie Apocalypse issue, coming out in Februar...

A 1K exchange

I have two 1K stories I'm trying to expand into longer stories in the 4-5K range. One is a fantasy that I sent to two only two flash markets and got two glowing personals from, but complained of the abrupt ending and that it should be longer to flesh the true story out. The other is a SF and I've ne...

Thanks very much, everybody! It is safe to say that this has been a surreal month. I think it's safe to say you've hit critical mass! Penumbra put up a blog post on December 31st. They are putting out a "Best of Penumbra, Volume 1" anthology. My short story, "The Memory of Huckleberries," has been selected for inclusion. This was a very nice holiday surprise! Wooohoo! You're on fire, Rebecca! A while ago my sh...

Re: Cover Workshop

Depends on the angle as to how it will look in water (or glass if not filled with water). The egg shape is if your standing more over it. I'm look straight at it, so it will be more round. Try putting a marble in a glass at home and you'll see what I mean. Fill it with water and it does change the s...

Re: Cover Workshop

Here are my ideas: For starters the moon looks too egg shaped. It's an optical illusion from the triangle shape of the glass and the moon crossing above the lip of the glass. I think if you shrink the moon down to below that line it might help. Also a toothpick in the moon...which might be kinda har...

Re: Five Minute Rant

Wow. Can you imagine the author thinking she's going to wow the public with her risky book and falling flat? This is every authors worst nightmare. Also there is a huge thing on Goodreads right now with cyber bulling. I think that people are targeting authors they don't like (or maybe behave badly t...
