Re: Success!

Nice! I'll keep my eye out for it next month. I can't wait to read your pro debut Alex! I'm looking forward to the next installment of Martin's stories about the Old Town Tavern...the next story in DSF is one of those right? I'm kinda a series junkie. When I find one I like I try to read them all *i...

And armed with a great example of polysyndeton! (multiple conjunctions in a sentence)...

Congratulations!!! (to the Clarion completion, not the great polysyndetion, rhetorical device use).

Re: Success!

Gwendolyn! what a nice little excerpt...your writing is always so beautiful, flowing from one sentence to the next. Congrats on the sale! Izanobu, congrats on the sale to Daily Science Fiction! So Clarion has started already? That is so exciting, time for you to write a winning story for WOTF...have...

Re: Intergalactic Writer's Exchange

Hey Alex- I love Dean Westley Smith's blog and I totally get what he says about critiques. I still feel I lean a lot by doing them for others and I know what info to take away when I get one. I've been burned with listing too much to random comments in critiques or edits! But if you have a part of a...

Re: Intergalactic Writer's Exchange

Well awesome! And good job WriteToLive. I think this will benefit a lot of writers who are looking for readers and critiques. Granted, everyone is at different levels, but I think a critique is a critique. Sometimes you can be just learning as a writer and be the best reader, because that response i...

Who would win this contest....

Just for fun. I spend a lot of time thinking about this and I think it would be a fun discussion. I think of popular authors/stories and wonder "hmmm...would a short version of this story have won WOTF?" I know that WOTF only chooses certain types of stories, but in my opinion those storie...

Re: NEW USERS! INTRODUCE YOURSELVES!

Nice to meet you Kenna! Your awesome to start out so early. People improve with practice, so in the next few years you'll be unstoppable, I'm betting. I wonder who the youngest winner of the contest is? Could you beat some record out there? Also nice to see you Brennan Harvey (Sp? - I know ideally c...

Re: ILLUSTRATORS' Q & A

I've been tossing around the idea to enter a few pieces of art work. I'm wondering if certain mediums are inappropriate. For example- if I had a drawing or a painting. I have a huge painting I did and do I take a picture of it to send it digitally? Or should I only send in work that can easily be sc...

Re: Success!

Sale #4 to Analog, for me. "Ray of Light" will appear very late this year, or probably early next. Yah, I can get used to being a "regular" in the genre's most venerable, most widely circulated print magazine. :D Huge Congratulations, Mr. T !!! :D Just like so many of the now-bi...

Re: NEW USERS! INTRODUCE YOURSELVES!

LOL ;) I just went to your blog earlier today and found Dean Smith's advice on this. It also hits the same point your trying to make to me about trying to avoid rewriting. Just write and sell, keep stories out there. I think it is good advice and one way to go about the business (except as I pointed...

Re: NEW USERS! INTRODUCE YOURSELVES!

Thank you both. This is good advice. I am extremely new, so sadly my work falls under the "still sucks" category (and that is not writers depression talking). I have a professional right now helping me with some of the technical stuff. I have sold some non fiction short stories and mostly ...

Re: NEW USERS! INTRODUCE YOURSELVES!

Unfortunately, I'm not at that point in my writing yet. I don't have that kind of skill. If I sent a story out to five mags and got five rejections I would take a look at what I could be doing differently - especially if I thought the story was right for the market. That is where I am in my writing....

Re: Success!

I have a story coming out in Chicken Soup for the Soul: New Moms edition on March 8th. I have also written articles for some magazines (mostly parenting stuff) and content sites. I also have done some guest blogs at some extremely popular blogs (the guest blogs are not paid work, but it gets my writ...

Re: NEW USERS! INTRODUCE YOURSELVES!

A great analogy! The way I see it- if I'm lucky enough to at some point write something worthy of a semi-finalist then I will get a critique and rewrite the story to make it better, hopefully publish. If I get a Finalist I have a good reason to shop it out to magazine to try and get a sale. If I get...

Re: NEW USERS! INTRODUCE YOURSELVES!

Oh dont worry- when I talk about fear of failure, it doesn't mean I have a fear of rejection slips :) That just motivates me more to fix what I did wrong. I'm a rewriter junkie. I mean I have a fear that my storyline will be a complete failure or I missed the point I wanted to make, ect. So I keep r...

Re: NEW USERS! INTRODUCE YOURSELVES!

Hi! I'm new- working on a submission I've been writing since Sept. Sort of a perfectionist (or ahem fear of failure) and had other projects going, but now I'm focusing one getting this one in sometime this year. Yeah, I know that is a vague goal... I have no aspirations of winning, just want to see ...
