Re: Etiquette Question: Responding to Emails from Magazines

I tend to, but I think the advice is generally not to, unless you have a specific question or they ask you to answer something.

If you do, keep it short. "Got it. Thanks! "

Baen Memorial Award (Near Future Hard SF)

Okay, how does this NOT have a thread already?! The Jim Baen Memorial Award is an annual contest for near-future hard SF stories of up to 8000 words. Winners receive publication at pro rates, as well as "an engraved award, free entry into the 2016 International Space Development Conference, a y...

I cannot tell a lie: I cut down my father's ferret tree.

Uniqueness in setting definitely counts. I wouldn't worry about genre labels per se, though.

That's a good point, Orbivillein.

Although the idea that Tor.com is even remotely similar to Highlights makes me laugh. (Even though I get what you mean, and agree with you.)

Re: Jibber Jabber - Q2 - Volume 33

Put another way: the more unique and interesting your setting & world building, the less competition you have. Don't just make another Star Trek/Star Wars/Mass Effect clone. Come up with a space opera that hasn't been seen before. Do something other than elves and orcs and dwarfs. This is short...

What did you publish in 2015?

In what I will readily admit is a self-serving move, I thought I'd start a thread where people can list their publications for the year. I have a post with my 2015 publishing highlights on my blog , if anyone wants to take a look. (I told you it was self-serving!) Seriously, though, I know a lot of ...

I managed to sign up without problems but I had trouble submitting; bizarrely, in the end, I had to remove all punctuation from my cover letter before it would submit. I had the exact same problem, although I left in my periods and commas. Apostrophes and ampersands were the big culprits, so I'm gu...

Currently prevaricating over whether to submit an ex-HM to the James White award (published in Interzone, good home exposure, but a wash on the money front if I get shortlisted and go to the con) or start subbing it round the mags instead. Re: Anyone know about Neoverse writing competition?

I had serious reservations about the terms of this contest, so I'm happy to see that they've updated their rules and taken out all the things I found troubling. Authors now retain all rights to unpublished stories, and the right of first refusal clause is gone too. As a bonus, the top twenty stories...

This sounds suspiciously like math, so I'm just going to go ahead and say that my score is π/0. I had an argument with my 6 year old daughter a few weeks ago about which was bigger, pi or infinity. She was convinced pi was bigger because its digits went on forever. Then she ended the argument with,...

Not familiar with them, but I would not submit to this.

I don't feel comfortable saying why here due to the fact that they sound like they have aggressive lawyers but would be happy to mention why in a PM.
