Re: Discussion: Q2 Volume 37

We've had all kinds of different results releasings over the years. Lately tho they've been all at once (hours, not days/weeks).
Personally I like the first round results method. If you're right out you know it and can send the story elsewhere, etc. It's the wait that kills ya. wotf001

Re: Discussion: Q3 Volume 37

I'm almost always good for the 450s.
Meaning I'll read and crit the first two pages.

Not always, but I've been known to write more than two pages for a critique. Not about the specific work, but usually about writing itself or things I've learned, etc.

Hermione,
I probably went and changed it. I'm fanatical like that.
But it sounds like something we could test in the troubleshooting area. Then we'll know for sure.

Time to change mine, but don't want to end up with the little x in the upper left circa Netscape 1.0.

Re: Discussion: Q3 Volume 37

Hey Corbin, Looking back I signed up almost a decade ago and at that point felt like I was late to the party. Not many of us still kicking around from that time. Preston had to go and win... I didn't know KD Wentworth well, but subbed to her when the sparks were new and fiery. After either or so yea...

Re: Discussion: Q3 Volume 36

@Henckel
Want me to look it over? (If it's under 10k)
I'm excited to have two other stories to read first, but they are both under 5k.
I tend to read in groups when I have some momentum.
Up to you!

Re: NEW USERS! INTRODUCE YOURSELVES!

Hey Dustin, I've actually never played D&D (shameful, I know, just had no one around that played), but that sounds so awesome haha. You've gotta teach me. ... So until now, I've basically never edited or revised a single story of mine. Pretty much just whipped up whatever I could and hoped it w...

Re: NEW USERS! INTRODUCE YOURSELVES!

Hi Simon, That's quite the introduction! You've subbed five times before graduating HS? Dang. I like your record, too. Keep getting better! I spent my final year of HS rewriting D&D's rules to my liking. The character sheets were Boss. I had about 30 abilities listed and anyone could be anything...

Re: Professional Editor for WOTF piece?

My wife is a professional author and gets paid well to critique manuscripts. I'm very lucky to have her to read my stories. I still haven't won. But that's totally on me. I just don't write enough words to flex the muscles needed to hit one out of the park. That said, I have a few readers that go ov...

Re: Quick question about the contest rule 5?

LQS! I believe we're talking about Martin Shoemaker. If memory serves, he subbed many of his final entries on the first day of the quarter so that he would be in before his 4th pro story was published. When he finally did win, this happened. His story was submitted here, and his 4th pro was pubbed. ...

Indeed! If you win, you'll be flown to LA from - wherever you are!
I mean, the illustrators might be more from outside the USA than inside nowadays.

Re: Quick question about the contest rule 5?

OK, well, not sure why I/some haven't seen it that way before, but the way it reads is 8c per word AND 5k. So, 8c per word and 4k copies and you're good. The length of a short story has been debated over the years as well, and the one thing we've pretty much found is that flash fiction is not a shor...

Re: Quick question about the contest rule 5?

That is indeed a confusing item. We've found ourselves periodically confused by that as well. I recommend gathering as much data as you can, more than you have here even, and e-mailing Joni, the contest admin. She would likely have to determine based on the copies/hits rule. Nowadays Bing bots can m...

Re: Number of Published Finalists

Hermoine, I don't know if the 4th place finishers are the PF, but I don't think they consider final placement / rank when filling out the volume. They'll go by story length or shoring up a weakness (needs more fantasy, choose a fantasy story). That said, my first finalist was 4th place. Joni told me...

My personal favorite so far is Adramelech by Sean Hazlett, V. 33. What about the anthologies in general though? I'd love some suggestions about which one to buy next. (So far mine is V. 35. I've loved every story there.) Sean was a member here for years. Cool dude. V.31 is my favorite collection. F...

Why do you submit? (all markets)

Hi all, Was reading a different post and got to thinking, why do people (read: you) submit stories to markets? We've asked why we write, and the most common answer seemed to be I must . But why submit? There's researching the market, formatting for it, getting the editor's name correct, listing in T...
