Re: Discussion: Q2 Volume 37

Longtime board lurker here, feeling the stress this week and making an account. I don't have very high hopes for my first WotF entry, but even so, the butterflies are still there. David's latest tip scared me, but an earlier one had given me great hope, so now it's canceled out, I guess. I'm almost...

Re: What have you done when the words no longer flowed onto the page?

I would say I'm still in this mode. I haven't hit a flow state in years. My current process is to write by hand first, then transcribe. I didn't think it was possible for me to write slower, but I found a way. wotf005

Re: Cursing and Sexual Situations in WOTF Stories?

I don't ever use terms which are racist or hurtful. Ever. Even in historical timepieces. It's not a matter of political correctness; it's a matter of one reader, any reader, being emotionally hurt over choice of words you chose to put into a manuscript. Your reader, or fan, isn't going to peruse th...

Re: Cursing and Sexual Situations in WOTF Stories?

Not sure if this is the write place to ask this, but here goes. What about works set in time periods where current socially acceptable terms would be anachronistic, but the terms of the day are now considered unacceptable? I do not recommend this at all. Not for big buzzwords, anyway. Words like We...

Sounds good. Not that you have to get up that early, but that we get up *on time* and get butt in chair until that first draft is done. Then we can sleep!

Can anyone explain the published finalist thing? I'm there to read the stories, not the bios, but I do usually read the bios and I don't recall anything about a finalist's story... http://forum.writersofthefuture.com/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=7988 Is a good thread. Basically if the volume is thin or ...

Re: Discussion: Q4 Volume 37

Reuben, When I'm working on something my body wakes me up between 4 and 5 consistently. Maybe that's why I'm scared to start! I could commit to 5am. Lately I'm pushing 6 and I get up and watch the news for an hour before playing video games until I start work. Bad habits! Let me know what time works...

Re: Horrid fiction?

Given that you can download samples of novels on Amazon for Kindle, I'd say you have an endless field of possibilities. Although I'd swap horrid with amateur. I think traditionally published and horrid would be more of a personal opinion and may not match your own. But self-published beginner is mor...

Re: Discussion: Q2 Volume 37

I love first and would write every short story that way, but lately I've been looking at the story and asking myself it it can be 3rd. If the answer is yes, then I switch it.

My novels are in 3rd. As much as I love writing in 1st, I dislike novels in 1st (reading or writing).

Re: Discussion: Q2 Volume 37

We've had all kinds of different results releasings over the years. Lately tho they've been all at once (hours, not days/weeks).
Personally I like the first round results method. If you're right out you know it and can send the story elsewhere, etc. It's the wait that kills ya. wotf001

Re: Discussion: Q3 Volume 37

I'm almost always good for the 450s.
Meaning I'll read and crit the first two pages.

Not always, but I've been known to write more than two pages for a critique. Not about the specific work, but usually about writing itself or things I've learned, etc.

But it sounds like something we could test in the troubleshooting area. Then we'll know for sure.

Time to change mine, but don't want to end up with the little x in the upper left circa Netscape 1.0.
