Re: Discussion: Q1 Volume 37

Silver HM for me! Just got the email. Congratulations everyone! I'm new to the contest, so wondering if someone could explain the difference between Silver HM and HM. Digging a little deeper, Dave (and Kary) do a first pass and start sifting into piles. Rs go into the R pile. Read this one goes int...

Me, I would totally not use the real names. Not when you can get your point across with easy word changes.

Good idea changing the opening. Especially after Dave said to consider how many of those type he may get.

I'm super excited to be in Q2. Just want to reiterate that in Q3.
So I'm working away on my Q3 so I can be IN here, too!

I'll probably send a PM or two in the next week.

Re: Discussion: Q2 Volume 37

I recommend not using any print tricks for emphasis beyond italics.
Rarely, and probably only once per story do you see something like BAM or CRUNCH at most.
Never !!! It's just not proper grammar. Like I used to say to my middle school bullies: use your words.

Re: Manuscript format question

I agree with making a format and getting used to typing in it. Initially I liked the font and style I had typed in for years and I stuck to that, changing only when about to submit. Then I found myself printing and reading one more time, catching, fixing... eventually I just got used to the format. ...

Re: Do the judges receive print or electronic copies of the stories to review?

In the past we mailed stories. Then they opened electronically. Some did that, some mailed. Now, while mailing is an option, most submit online. Stories don't get printed out *. Dave prefers e-copies. *one quarter there was a problem with the submission engine. People e-mailed their stories to Joni ...

Re: Manuscript format question

I believe margins are 1" top, left, bottom 1.5" right.
This is a throwback to paper subs needing a little more space for reader notations. Now it probably helps keep 250 words per page, etc.

Re: NEW USERS! INTRODUCE YOURSELVES!

Wulf, I'm thinking the amount of dedication and talent can be defined on a sliding scale. While I can't surmise at others' talent levels, I'm certain mine is pretty low. I just have hours and hours of dedication. Sadly, they are spread out over decades instead of focused or I would likely have been ...

I don't have anything short to trade at the moment, but I'll have a look. I was a first reader at Every Day Fiction for several years. I tend to read that way: character, story not vignette, etc. If that's OK, send me a PM and I'll follow with my e-mail address.
